Rhino 8 UI inconsistencies with R7

Thanks for the replies @Wiley,

I’ll take a look into this, I’m assuming Windows?

The toolbar appears in strange places and you want to move it onto the screen to a place that makes sense to you, I understand that. If it did not do this however, you would not need to move it?

So it visually feels like you should be able to move it? And when you can’t it’s not very intuitive.
I’ll think about this as well.

I’d be curious to know more about if/why you frequently turn toolbars on/off and reoganise layouts and if this UI item is a daily pain point for you

FWIW, you’re not alone with this one. I don’t know that the Rhino 7 gripper is better/prettier, but at least it disappears when one locks the docked windows:

One can hide the dots, buts that’s hardly a solution (i.e. the large grip area is still there). This issue appears to be related (i.e. the headers do not disappear when locking docked windows):

All quite bloatey…

Another bug on the dropdown.

There was no Enscape Toolbar initially.

After manually loading the Toolbar settings in options.

The Enscape toolbar shows up.

Also, the Enscape toolbar was not saved in the “preset of opened toolbars”, even though I opened it in my last session.

So to answer your question:

I’d be curious to know more about if/why you frequently turn toolbars on/off and reoganise layouts and if this UI item is a daily pain point for you

Until the Rhino UI stabilizes, it will continue to be a pain for me, and for many others

I’ve seen it in some other products too, when the developers do not follow the principle, “Do not fix it if it ain’t broke”.
We’ve had a decent UI in Rhino 7 and before, easy to use and customize. Now the default layout is bad and every time we install a new license of Rhino we have to struggle to get something similar as we had in Rh. 7.

Good to know

YouTrack’d and in my pile for diagnosis. Any chance of a SystemInfo.txt dump to add to the ticket @Wiley ?

Thanks for the bug report!

I’m sorry Rhino 8 isn’t an improvement for you over Rhino 7. We are working to make it as good as, and better than Rhino 7 in every aspect.

Are WindowLayouts not performing correctly for you? If not I would like to log bugs if they don’t already exist so we can fix them.

You are welcome. I also want Rhino to succeed!

@CallumSykes

Today I found myself using the Lights and Lights tool, which I would rather be hidden normally so not to overcrowd the tab bar.

So yes, I think having a quick search function like Rhino 7 would speed up finding the toolbar among 100 others immensely.

This is the layout we like to work with. It is difficult to make it like this from the default one.
With previous default 2 default Main columns it was easy to explain the logical order of the toolbars to our students. With the three columns, this order is broken, so we have to customize it.
The docking of the Osnap and Filters toolbars in one horizontal line at the bottom is a real challenge.

You should be able to save this layout and export it for others to use so you don’t have to recreate it each time.
Window > Window Layouts > Save Window Layout

Will the saved and exported Windows Layout work on different computers with different screen resolutions?

(I must confess I’ve not used it much), but you can share between win/mac and it should work seamlessly. At the very least it will avoid you toggling on/off many different panels and toolbars and their locations. It’s possible the layout won’t be exactly to your liking between different screen resolutions as things will scale, but it should save you quite a bit of work.

If it doesn’t work as you expect, I’d be happy to log bugs and see if any issues you find can’t be fixed.

@stevebaer I am attaching my precious toolbar that I have been using for many years. I think this is the problem as it might carry lots of legacy settings from previous versions.

@CallumSykes
Is there any follow up on this?
It’s quite annoying the right click doesn’t call the menu.

If you mean the Right click to show toolbar/panels menu, it is awaiting testing, but will be in the 8.12 SR

  1. I was really surprised to see Rhino 8 use an overly dark grey as the accent color.

  2. Also, the icon sizes are imho out of proportion.

Here is how Rhino 7 looks like which we all grew to love.

Options > Advanced and search for “color”
Result will be many colors for different parts of the interface and display, more than show in the image, below which you can customize as desired.

“we all” - It is a fallacy to assume everyone shares your personal preferences.

Hello, recently it has become possible to switch from one toolbar to another in a container using the mouse wheel, but I just realized that this does not work on containers placed on the right and left sides of the window.

@kitjmv if you click the tab, can you scroll? I seem to be able to on Mac and Windows

  1. These super distracting 4 dots on each docked tab bar must hide automatically, as well as the space they occupy (Rhino 7 style).
  2. Tabs must be the same angular shape as in Rhino 7. Delete all rounded tabs forever.
  3. Transparent docking preview must show the whole frame, just liie in Rhino 7.
  4. Sliders must be thick and rectangular to improve thenease of use, not super slim and rounded.
  5. Fix the lagging and improperly positioned mouse tooltips while howering over icons.
  6. Some menus include text which is hard to read due to poorly chosen low contrast font relative to the background.
  7. Allow middle mouse click to instantly open the assigned child tab bar (if any).
  8. Bonus hint: Scrap the Rhino 8 UI and make Rhino 9’s UI same as Rhino 7’s.
  9. Win!

Hello @CallumSykes ,

I’m not sure we understand each other; it’s not about the click but the mouse wheel.
This is the continuation of this fix:

(Sorry, I didn’t take the time to find it earlier. Maybe you can move the messages there.)
