Rhino 8 Crashes when I try to use Materials

I’m using Rhino 8 (latest version) on a 2023 MacBook Pro M3 (macOS Sequoia 15.3.1), and I’m experiencing crashes whenever I try to open the Materials panel.

I’m still learning Rhino and have mainly been working with sample models. When applying materials to the Penguin model, Rhino crashes. If I reload, I might get one step further before it crashes again. I’ve tried troubleshooting with disabling render plug-ins and trying to open the materials panel is multiple different files. Despite this, the issue persists. Has anyone else encountered this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Please try restarting your device. If it persists then: restart Rhino without opening a document, then Rhino 8 > Settings > Rhino Render. Switch to the CPU tab and make sure CPU is checked as render device. Then restart Rhino and see if this helps with materials.

Please send in crash reports when the Rhino crash reporter dialog appears after a crash - do fill in your email address, that helps us to understand better about crashes, and potentially reach out for more information.
