Rhino crashing while opening a bigger file

As you say, that’s a known problem and is on the list as RH-86119 (Crash When Picking Materials Panel on Mac)

To work around this crash for the time being, see:

Rhino 8 Crashes when I try to use Materials

Please try restarting your device. If it persists then: restart Rhino without opening a document, then Rhino 8 > Settings > Rhino Render. Switch to the CPU tab and make sure CPU is checked as render device. Then restart Rhino and see if this helps with materials. Please send in crash reports when the Rhino crash reporter dialog appears after a crash - do fill in your email address, that helps us to understand better about crashes, and potentially reach out for more information.
