Yes Boltgen is the latest version for Rhino 6 here.
Ok, the version string that was in your first System Information results made me believe you were running on an Intel HD Graphics GPU.
You may want to check whether your Nvidia GPU driver is up-to-date. Currently the latest is http://www.nvidia.co.uk/download/driverResults.aspx/132979/en-uk
I did update the Nvidia driver.
Now, the āUpdate Your Pluginsā Dialog that comes up and crashes, crashes with the windows open without containing other text than a window title whereas before it crashed after the window content text had been displayed. So something seems to play a role related to a new graphics driver for the startup but a new Nvidia driver did not quite fix it.
Update: text in error is back after second attempt. Must be some other glitch.
Thanks for all the tips.
The program, however, does not run properly here.
Do you recommend to buy different computers for Rhino 6 best experience. What computers / hardware are guaranteed to run Rhino 6 with Windows 10?
(This here is an Asus G752VS laptop).
This should be pretty good hardware. This is a gamers laptop, so could you check if there is any geforce experience software running? Especially those bits that are to do with screencasting from within games etc? If any of that is running, please try disabling all of that and see if Rhino agrees with that.
Edit: There are some funky looking things like the gaming center and the g-sync feature. I unfortunately donāt know what these all do, but you probably could look into making a profile for Rhino that is using as few gaming-y things as possible (whatever that means :S )
SUCCESS!!!
Not sure what it was in the end.
-
Removed all suggested 3D bloatware - Asus Splendid Video Entertainment, Nvidia Geforce Experience, etc. etc, restarted, removed some more whatever seemed not necessary, NO SUCCESS.
-
Removed Rhino 6 including regedit again, restarted, re-installed, NO SUCCESS; updated to the latest version from yesterday (Rhino 6 SR4 2018-4-10 (Rhino 6, 6.4.18100.1591, Git hash:master @ b6485d60ae29d5ee76751120dc9232f8b172e934)
Licence type: Educational, build 2018-04-10) - but then, Rhino 6 crashed at the start in a slightly different way: it remained āresponsiveā with the first splash screen where one can select a template, so something changed. -
For whatever reason, Windows 10 just found another of these automatic cumulative updates to perform today, after it had been updated continuously before, last updates 9.4.2018. 16.3.2018, etc (I never delayed these) - and NOW ā¦ SUCCESS!!!
Now Rhino 6 runs nicely : ) with the Boltgen plugin also installed again (latest one there as before).
Thanks for all the suggestions.
Even if we cannot know what it was, I am sure the answer must be somewhere in the region between Rhino 6 and some video or other system aspect, and some improvements along the line from various sides.
I am glad you have a working Rhino 6 now. You (and Windows) did many changes, so hard to know for sure what in the end wad the decisive change. But at least we have now a thread to refer to in case someone else runs into a similar problem.
Anyone else get the unasked for and denied update from Windows 10 last evening. Another āPatch Tuesdayā and I woke up this morning to news that MS was going to do the big Spring update yesterday but over the weekend they discovered a bug so put that off. So what was the thing they did for me yesterday?
Thanks for the warning.
For whatever reason Rhino 6 behaves now again as it did initially. It crashes cold when starting it. It does not get past the warning screen.
I come to believe that a software that is that unstable must necessarily be programmed to not play nice. I have other packages running on this computer I am afraid - as I cannot afford a standalone laptop to make sure Rhino 6 has a ācleanā environment. That is an unrealistic expectation to asssume a user can uninstall everything else just as is. Blender runs well, I have an IDL license that runs, and so on. They all run. Rhino 5 manages even to run.
So if Rhino 6 cannot be started, and after this odyssey (above) of back and forth and I dont know what all, just to have it crash permanently again, all the time, I think I am done fault searching here. It is the software that seems to be terminally buggy.
can you open v5 and pot a screen shot of tools>options>view>open gl
Iāll be willing to bet your nvidia or intel drivers are quite old and need to be updated.
to update your intel drivers: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html
to update your nvidia drivers: https://www.nvidia.com/download/index.aspx
This is happening on my computer today and I just updated Rhino 6 Educational yesterday. Now its not working. Went through the process of safe mode and disabling plugins, updated graphics card, etc. It still wont open when I disable everything. Only opens in safe mode. Iām on a deadline so this is not good, hoping to get some help. I also tried reinstalling Rhino 6 already and nothing changed.
Hello - can you please start Rhino as best you can and run the SystemInfo command, then post the results here?
-Pascal
Figured it out. The problem was with my monitor plugged into hdmi on my laptop. May of had to do with which screen was set as primary screen. I unplugged monitor and rhino opened fine. Go figure!
Thanks.
Billy
I was having the same problem and thanks to @bguarino01ās solution my problem is fixed. This is the strangest problem Iāve ever had with Rhinoā¦
My Rhino 6 decided to have the same issue here this year. It just donāt finish opening. It opens with safe mode and it is not plugin related.
Doing what @Helvetosaur suggested (quote below) stopped the crashing. My question is, should I let this permanently disabled?
Btw, I do not know why Rhino uses the integrated cards instead of Quadro. I have set at NVIDIA control panel that rhino should use it but it makes no difference. Yes, the computer and Rhino were restarted.

Hmm, Iām wondering about this:
Do you have any external monitors plugged into your laptop? If so, can you try with them disconnected first?
I did had two monitors attached to a docking station, but I also had the issue before without the monitors.
Anyway I have a strong feeling that the issue is with my Quadro cardā¦ a lot of times it does not run even when my integrated card is running 99%, like with videoconferences. It does has sometimes some really random spikes, so I really donāt know/donāt understand what is the issue there. I am guessing it is not a Rhino issue.
Here is the system info (GPU disabled) without the docking station.

The problem looks like itās either the use of the docking station (unplugging monitors does not eliminate that, you need to disconnect from the docking station entirely) or itās whatever that āCitrix display deviceā is. Are you accessing this laptop remotely?
Hereās the gist of the problemā¦ Your laptop s configured in such a way that the Windows Main Display device is setup to be some kind of external display adapter. When that happens on a laptop, Windows forces the use of the integrated GPU to always be usedā¦thereās nothing Rhino can do about it. Unplugging the external monitors wonāt have any effect if the laptop is still connected to a docking station. In order to eliminate any/all external forces as the cause, please disconnect your laptop from everything. I would also see about uninstalling whatever that Citrix display device driver is.
EDIT: It also appears that the Intel drivers are crashing on startup because of thisā¦which is why youāre also not getting any kind of OpenGL support. With the laptop completely disconnected from the docking station and external devices, 6.32 should automatically be selecting the NVidia GPUā¦ if itās not, then something else is still in the way.

Hereās what Citrix is:
Sounds like something that could confound anything that falls outside their preconceived notions of what a computer is used for.
Thanksā¦ I am aware of what Citrix isā¦hence my question about remote accessā¦ What Iām not sure about is the driver that appears to be showing up in Rhinos SystemInfoā¦ It sounds like it could be the real cause of the problem hereā¦ We just need more information on this setup in general.
