Hi
The problem is Microsoft did not also update the display driver for your display adapter.
There is a newer one but Microsoft is managing the updates and I’ve heard from other users that this management tool rolls the driver back to the earlier buggy one.
I don’t know what to suggest.
I can get you a link to the driver but I don’t know how to disable this outdated management tool on your Surface.
Unfortunately, this is one of the downsides of using a laptop/notebook/netbook
Thank you. I will try and download the driver and see what it does. Does it matter that I also have an addition display adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GPU but Rhino is using the HD Graphics 520
Good question. I was not aware that there was a surface with an accelerated display adapter.
My additional concern is that if your computer is setup properly, Rhino should be finding and using the GeForce.
Hopefully, updating the Intel driver will sort out the GeForce issue too.
This looks like either your driver installation is busted. I’d start by completely remove the drivers for your current GPU (but don’t reboot), then ensure you do a clean install of the GPU driver. Reboot and see if that helps.
Since Rhino System Information can’t see what GPU you have maybe you can post a screenshot of the display adapters section expanded in the device manager.
HI Nathan,
thank you for your help.
I did check a second time my system info and you can see the result up here.
In any case I did a nvidia driver clean installation again but you can judge the result your self:

This goes far beyond my knowledge, the only thing I know so far is that the same file Rhino 5 works just fine. please notice that this problem happens with many other files, made from start in Rhino 6 or simply imported a s rhino 5 files.
I wish I could update my vs to Rhino 6 but until I find out what is going wrong, as you can seem it almost impossible to work with it.
it something related to the GPU as the string suggest but that is all I know,
would you please investigate on this?
Hi,
I unchecked all the third party plug in and restarted the system but nothing really has changed. moreover i have start noticing two others problem that I consider minor problems compared to the black screen:
1- when rhino goes black, some time, I am still able to access the command prompt and under system info I noticed that the driver information has disappeared. On the other hand, when rhino is running the driver version is correctly reported by the system report.
2- The issue It is totally random but it really happens more often when rhino is running in render or shadow mode.
3- few times i noticed as reported in other topics that lines or surfaces disappear from the view port but you can still see the gumball or control points acting on those curves ( attached img)
4- I have noticed when it crashes after I forced rhino to quit sometimes I receive the message that rhino failed to allocate the memory…
here after pls see my attachments and error reports November 27 at 07:30 AM in Rhino version 6.11.18323.19181: nvoglv64!DrvPresentBuffers – Access Denied

HI Pascal,
I checked the memory banks and they seems to be just fine.
the memory usage varies form 500 MB to 1100 MB so not sure if this could be the problem since the system has 64 gb of RAM available.
I Will try to make a Rhino 6 clean installation right now, I will give you an update soon.
In the mean time allow me to recap all I know so far:
plugin that not ship with rhino are disabled
a memory allocation failure happens few times and Rhino quit and crashes. A memory allocation failure warning will be displayed.
the error nvlog64!DrvpresentBuffer-Access Denied happens very often and here is what happen:
Rhino view port become black, the command prompt works fine so if system info is prompted the command line shows that the system doesn’t read the driver anymore, hence display “null” instead of the driver code (system info been checked during modelling returns the corrects driver code). I must quit Rhino and Rhino crash mask appears asking me to report the problem. Please have a look on my previous answer up here and see what Mcneel automated mail reported to me.
the nvidia GPU runs the driver available 416.94 . a newer one is available now I will make a clean installation and update the post.
Please let me know your thoughts.
Thank you
update:
Rhino has been updated to the latest version and the gpu too.
nothing has changed the vie port still become black and the system can’t see the GPU driver any more.
pls. notice i replaced the GPU and nothing has changed.
I made a clean installation of rhino and the GPU driver, noting has changed.
I have run a mem test and windows memory check for 6 hours and no error was foundduring the hardware test.
rhino 5 with the same model is stable.
@pascal They look like possible null pointer access since the address are 0x00 but there is not really enough information to give a real answer. Has this actually generated any crash reports that have been sent to RayGun?
