Rhino 6 black screen during startup or opening file while on secondary (4K) monitor. Fine on primary display

I’ve only started experiencing this problem on my new laptop. With my setup I have two screen: laptop (1080p) and 4K monitor. Rhino will crash while loading on 2nd monitor and will load fine on the 1080p. Rhino will similarly crash (black screen) while opening a new file on the 4K monitor.

All my video drivers are up to date. I have repaired and rebooted Rhino three or four times: same problem.

Black screen of death while starting up Rhino 6 on 4K monitor.

Rhino loads fine on my laptop screen even if 4K monitor is plugged in. I am able to move the window to the 2nd screen.

My only workaround is to load rhino in safe mode, move the window to the primary laptop screen, close, reopen rhino and the file I was working on and drag and drop it back into the 4K screen again. no issues unlit I need to open a new file.

Any guesses on what the issue might be?

Here is a larger album of images. It seems to be a GPU acceleration issue. Rhino 6 Black Screen of Death on 2nd Monitor - Album on Imgur

When Rhino boots with the black viewports, please run Help > System Information, and post the results.

Likewise please post the results of the Help > System Information when you have rhino properly starting on the other monitor (but not safe mode).

Makes sense. I’ve copy-pasted it below. Any help appreciated.

Any idea how to solve this problem? I have the same issue here…

No solution. Only a workaround.

Rhino only works on whatever it considers to be the primary monitor. I had to disable my laptop screen and only use my 4K monitor.

:frowning:

Just to eliminate the possibility that a plugin is interfering, please disable the enscape plugin and restart Rhino. I want to make sure this is a problem in Rhino itself.

I dont have such a plugin for rhino. However, i do have another plugin called RhinoResurf. When i disabled it i didnt get this problem anymore.

@YokoK, Can you inform Weiguo Li, developer of RhinoResurf, about this issue.

Hi Kelvin,

I’ve informed Weiguo. Thank you

Please help
Getting the black screen in the viewports when I open Rhino 6. It was working fine yesterday and my computer updated and now I am getting the black screen. I am using a microsoft surface pro

I have seen this happen more after the recent Windows updates. Although your driver date looks ok please try reinstalling it - check on intel.com for the very latest driver for your GPU.

Thanks, I installed a driver and its working now

The driver that fixes this problem was released the second week of October 2018.
The May driver you have (and earlier), has this problem with the recent Windows update.

Try updating your graphics driver. John Brock supplied a link to the Intel driver downloads above.

i tried that, didnt work. Any other way to fix it?

Does Rhino display normal until a specific file is loaded?

Were you able to update to a more recent driver?

no I already have the most recent one.
I loaded it in safe mode and that seems to be a temporary fix.

Experiencing the same issue. Have updated drivers and also swapped out the graphics card in an attempt to figure out what is causing the issue. The issue only occurs when 2 monitors are plugged in and Rhino opens on the second screen.

Has anyone been able to resolve the issue?

@dvoshart are you still experiencing the issue a year on??

@stevebaer

We are also getting this now with new laptops we have purchased. When opening a file, just as Rhino is about to draw the viewports the process locks up and the viewports are black.

We recently began evaluating laptops, and thought we had an issue with a laptop, but it turns out to be Rhino itself, when run on a Non-Primary Monitor. I have 3 monitors attached, a 1080p, 1440p, and a 4K monitor.

I can cause the problem to occur by setting each of the 3 monitors as Primary and then trying to open a file in Rhino on any of the other 2 monitors.

I have a Hybrid Graphics Laptop with Intel and NVidia RTX 2060. I have the latest drivers from NVidia, and recent drivers from Intel.

We are running the 1903 build of Windows 10. I don’t believe this problem occurred prior to the 1903 update; because we had thought a previous laptop was the issue, and purchased these laptops. But initially they did not have the 1903 update, and now that they do are exhibiting the same issue with Rhino.

For reference here is the file I was loading to cause the issue.
