Font Arial export as .ai pshop says font not available and it vanishes

Hi,
V5 AND V8.
SAME ISSUE IN V8.
I use Arial, in both Msoft Word, Photoshop, Rhino etc etc.
Its installed on the PC !
I create some text characters with Arial in Rhino A B C D E etc.
I select these along with my dimensions (which also use Arial) and lines and export as .ai
open this into pshop 26.3 latest, and it says uses fonts not available. continue, I go yes.
it says rasterising…

I see the dims but not the A B C etc. yet both use Arial.

I try in CS6, same problem.

does this from V5 and V8. and no doubt V7.

Whats going on ?

Steve

Help !
@Helvetosaur
@Gijs

and whats happened to Pascal, I see no masked icon to choose for @

I need to get this image off to someone and cannot without getting Arial to appear when opening the .ai

I tried for .dxf or .dwg but Pshop says doesnt recognise a 3D file.

I tried the .pdf but the entire scene is wanting to be exported, its ignoring my selected item.

Why is it so difficult to get a simple arial text into Pshop from Rhino ?

V5 and V8.

should have sent this hours ago.

HELP !!!

Steve

Hi,
just searched on Pascal and found that out so left a reply.
though its not come to top of stack,
I wondered why such a post was awaiting a reply as normally Pascal was onto it like a terrier onto a rat !
I feel like a fish out of water with this problem.

Steve

I cannot export any text out of Rhino 9 WIP into *.ai

Curves yes but when I export curves and text, only the curves import again into Rhino.

Why can’t Rhino import an *.ai with text? This also failed in Rhino 5…

The same curve and text exported as *.pdf imported into Rhino again works fine.

Hi,
Basically then Rhino has a problem. WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN SOLVED.
It is unable to export text as .ai
It is unable to use .ai to get work into Photoshop.
Anyone needing a Rhino Photoshop workflow has a problem.
.ai is the suggested route for same.

pdf wants to export the entire scene, which is huge, the part I want to export is a small part of that.

I will get smoke from my GPU if I try for the entire scene, at the resolution I need to open as so as to see the detail in the item being exported.

This needs getting to the developers for a quick fix and update on V8 which I have only just bought, for its bug free usage.as I need to take work into photoshop !

How do we get this to the attention of the developers for a quick fix ?
perhaps…
@bobmcneel

Can I rasterise the text in Rhino , that then solves that problem, how is that done ?

Do I have to get Fusion360 to get it into that then export as .ai ?

why is it the dimensions are ok, they also use Arial.

Is there a font that would be ok for text ?

This is a dream, I will wake up in a cold sweat !

Steve

You can convert to boundary curves and then hatch, that’s better than rastered. For GIMP, I export *.svg which I can then import as paths.

Hi Steve -

Simply select that small part, run Export, and pick the PDF file format.
-wim

Hi,
V5
I do that, the run command Export, and select .pdf and I get a preview of the entire scene in colour, then continue it and get PDF24fax appear with a B/W image.
I normally use PDF24 pdf maker, so why their FAX version appears I dont know.
However it also showed the entire scene.

Steve

So long story short… forget *.ai?

the emphasize should be here “was” as @martinsiegrist quoted above pascal is retired and no longer answering here.

i wonder can you guys not export text at all to illu? on mac that seems to be working just fine, but i remember having to export as dwg at some point for it to show up properly in illustrator, the other way around still does not seem to work fully with ai, text does not show up, here the dwg file format comes to rescue again.

just use dwg

So why is there even an *.ai export?

somebody from the developers once wrote that the ai export import is ancient, i am not sure if this is going to change ever, but since illustrator is one of the more often frequented packages being used for documentation for instance i also would think it should bear some importance

I don’t need *.ai, GIMP imports *.svg so all good

i just tried gimp, it feels like how photoshop pre release 0.63 (in 1988) might have felt like  ok i am just kidding that is your tool of choice, not going to bash it, i am also trying to avoid photoshop but there really are not so many alternatives, i bought affinity which is ok, it still feels a bit clunky.

svg by the way does not appear to export text properly either, none of the applications kept the text in tact and split each letter. is that something you experience either? importing it into gimp that also did not work even though i checked retain paths etc.

You can bash the GIMP if that’s what you like, not my problem. I mostly just need basic image editing and GIMP does more than that.

Regarding *.svg… right it doesn’t do text.

definitely not my intention.

i think the idea i tried to put out there is the best all around format, dwg seems still a good choice, but not every tool imports that.

Hi,
so .dwg it is then.
Just one problem
I get this appear, in the latest phtoshop 26.3

Steve

No need to rasterize. You can explode text objects into objects and DupBorder to get the outlines, or create TextObject texts as curves directly.

right dwg does not import to photoshop but to illustrator.

one question is important to solve at first i guess, which is if you need the text to be editable in photoshop, if so the only way i found is to import it to illustrator first and then export as psd, any other attempt failed.

if you simply want the entire thing to show up in photoshop there are millions of methods, also pdf would work

there your issue is probably only that you should use the export selected instead of export, you can also define the area you want to export during the pdf settings under “view and output scale” (on mac at least for windows it might be similar) then select either viewport or you can select window and select the area you want to export.
