Wishes for iRhino WIP - Hovering please and more

Hey Folks,
after the release of R8 I want to throw some of my wishes in the iRhino pot.
I really like to use the iRhino especially the scan function of a room is good way to speed up my workflow.
for me the Ipad getting more and more important. Years ago I just used it for drawing → now I use it for some heavy Workflows. Since last december I use a M2 Ipad pro 12,9 with 16 GB RAM wich is very capable and for me the hovering function is a total game changer because you are able to use it with a classic mouse like workaround. My hopes is that you guys implement this function in a future build because for example with the hovering you are able to preview a point before you pin it down. And with this function it is possible to use iRhino more like the desktop version also without any kind of mouse → yust the pencil (hovering ist a kind of a mouse pointer)
In my fantasies and future thought I see iRhino more and more important for my workarount … small fast sketchy drawings … small visualisations together with the customers … 3d Scans on the go … and more and more.
For this I like to see a kind of material editor because rendering (raytrace viewport) with the M2 Ipad should be way faster than with (my) old intel macbook . . . I feel it as nice option to try some easy colors and small visualisations on the go.
I’d also like to see a kind of the sketching tool from Rhino desktop integrated to iRhino because with iRhino you are able to use the apple Pencil and this tool is very capable in kind of sketching. (sorry I found it in the menu . . . )With this tool and the auto Cplane clipping you are able to drax dirty sketches in 3 dimensions and this is something I am looking for years (actually I am using uMake for this) but I think iRhino could do this task way better and with the other functions and the connection to the desktop this will be huge.

An my wish is also a undo gesture with a two finger tap

I total like to use iRhino and will do it in the future and hope you also believe in this (I think workintense) project - for me this is part of the strong Rhino future! Thanks for doing and developing this!

Thanks for all the feedback @HugoIII

I need to rewrite our gesture controls code for iRhino to support multiple inputs such as hover enabled pencil, external trackpad and mouse. But I agree that this will make picking and drawing much easier. I logged a YT here:
https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RV-913/Support-pencil-hover

Logged here. Do you imagine using a built in set of materials or you’d like the ability to import your own or even create material in iRhino?

We have a new way of marking up models that uses the sketch command and auto align cplane and saves them as a snapshot. It’ll be in the next WIP release. Give it a try and let me know if this is close to what you have in mind

Double tap is reserved for zoom extents or zoom selected. I think those are more common than undo (at least for now)

@mkarimi Has the team studied the possibility of making Snapshots compatible with iRhino3D? This would make the app a powerful presentation tool.

Snapshot has already been ported to iRhino, but I’m only implementing it as a way to create and load markups as a first step. But I think we can easily extend this functionality. What do you have in mind @ryan.odom ?

I frequently set up presentations in Rhino and use Snapshots to run through options much like you would do in a PowerPoint presentation with still images. The advantage of staying in Rhino verse importing images into PPT is that I can stop, swivel around, look at the model in a different display mode if needed, sketch some markups, and then continue on to the next saved snapshot. For me, I save layer states, camera, display modes, and sometimes positions in Snapshots. I envision being able to set up Snapshots on my PC/Desktop, or directly in iRhino3D, and use it as an interactive presentation tool from an iPad on the fly. Lastly, I need to be able to send markups back to desktop Rhino where I can model those revisions. This works great on desktop while doing a screenshare, but is far too cumbersome to do quickly while, for example, grabbing coffee with a client in a crowded coffee shop.

Is animating between those snapshots important to you?

As an architectural designer, animated transitions don’t always make sense, but I could see scenarios where it would help tell the story. Maybe while explaining how a complex connection fits together, for example. I bet folks in the product design world would find animated transitions useful.

I’m building a tool that might help with some of your use cases. It’s not the same as iRhino3D, it’s a web-based platform (not an iOS app) designed for sharing Rhino models online via a link and also embedding them in websites. Room scanning is not a planned feature, but saved camera views and basic materials are. If it sounds like it might be interesting to you, you can sign up for the waiting list at https://www.modelgram.xyz/. It’s still in the early stages of development, but I’d love to hear more about your workflow and features that you are looking for

This is in the latest Testflight build.

Hello, is there a possibility to see the markups made with iRhino inside normal Rhino 3d for example for Mac? It would be great to be able to sketch this Markups on a normal layer like in sketching-mode (with zooming in and out and hovering) for collecting Informations on side and use them later in the normal desktop Rhino 3d version. At the moment I found a work-around by using the exported pictures, but it would be faster as discribed. Thank you very much - great tool!

Yes, if you’re using the latest Testflight build.

Markups get saved as snapshots in the 3DM file. You can view them by running the Snapshots command in Rhino. The geometry for each markup is on a separate hidden layer.

Thank you very much for the fast reply! Installed it, testing it starting next week.

I am really glad you are working on the new interface via the pencil

In my Case it isn’t working at all - The App freezes just seconds after command (no matter what command). This happens since the refresh to the new Interface system.

I think in my Case (I think) is the Hardware the trigger. . . I use an M2 Ipad Pro 12,9 with the hover function. I think that the hover function has something to do with the freezes. Anybody else use this configuration here?
My combination isn’t working at all.

I am really loking forward to use the hover function just like a mouse pointer - this would a real gamechanger in iRhino

I haven’t implemented the hover feature yet but there could be some defaults that I haven’t accounted for. It’ll be great if you can give me simple steps to reproduce this. I have the new iPad Pro coming in in a few days and will be revamping the pencil interactions.

The steps are simple in my Case - just use the Pencil - after the command the app freezes. It doesn‘t matter what command. And this happens every pencil use.

Sound really nice. It looks like the hardware is a beast- should be the perfect companion for iRhino. I am also very impressed with my m2 Pro it is really fast with the rendered mode from iRhino.
Looking forward to hear from your experiences with the „heavy“ one - and also looking forward to WWDC

@mkarimi I hope you enjoy your new iPad
Are you able to reproduce my problem with the crashes and the hovering on your device?

I wasn’t able to reproduce what you’re describing. But I did add support for pencil hover in 8.9.24144 (11.2.1)
Give that a try, hopefully works for you

@mkarimi 8.9 is am amazing step forward!!!
I am able to draw with my pencil - and I love the hover function.

But . . .
On every gumball use with the Apple Pencil the app is freezing I have to force quit it.

Thanks for the work it looks very promising!!!

I know about gumball. It’s on my list of things to fix
