Why release Rhino 8 if so many features have been dropped from WIP

Rhino 7 has many imperfections but is fairly stable and feels fast. Rhino 8 is super unstable freezing pc everytime and has got so too many bugs even for beta. if i wanted to report everything i would not do anything else. i gave it a chance this week for serious work but its impossible.

Hi Ivan -

It would help if you could provide the steps to make Rhino freeze your PC. Also, when Rhino freezes, please follow these instructions to force a crash dump and send the resulting file to us: Manually Creating a Memory Dump (DMP File) from an Unresponsive Rhino for Windows [McNeel Wiki]

There seems to be a problem with the recent commands toolbar, any custom tools I make when clicked add themselves repeatedly to the list, instead of like standard commands which only show one instance, hope that’s clear, thanks

Yes, this has already been reported here:

However, it was added as a comment to another youtrack item, not sure this problem has its own separate bug report or when it might be fixed… @wim ?

Hi Chris, I see this, thanks.

Cool

What on earth should we base the evaluation on, then?

You should not think recording bugs is always possible.

There has been always some bugs in the new version of Rhino. It was not a big problem. Not at all.
However, the previous versions didn’t have as many or feel as critical or annoying as this new version. That’s one the reasons.

I think that’s because, among other things, changing the code base (ETO) of the whole UI has been a big deal, but one that needed to be tackled one day. Now it’s almost done. Glad it happened, but looks like we need to give McNeel some credit here for some time still. I for my part am fine with that.

Interesting.

Me, too.

do you think v9 will be more about actual features implementation and refinement since eto transformation will have been done?

You are asking the wrong person, but my guess (and hope) is, once they got this off their chest, there will be (much) more free resources to be put into actual features.
Like documentation. This time big time.

(Edit: I know, lots of valuable stuff has been added in R8 regarding this, but a lot is still to be desired)

we can make a trip to seattle to adress it in person

does that mean that with the new code base it will be easier for mcneel to make changes to the ui going forward?

Mac and win are unified now (practically). That’s a big rucksack to drop.

ETO repository on github (yes, it’s open source)

RH-77516 is fixed in the latest BETA.

I wish that were 100% true. It’s definitely getting there but there is more work to do (especially in Settings).
