V8 vs. V7 - Display Mode inconsistencies!

Hello All,

I’m trying to visualize “Pender” which is (Pen + Render) view in V8 and it seems that there are a handful of inconsistencies and unexpected behaviors when it comes to below:

1- unpredictable behavior of the Ground Plane.
2- Missing Ambient Occlusion Shadows.
3- Clicking on a Box Will reveal it’s Material color.

I made sure to:-
1- Work on the same file (attached)
2- Use the same Render Engine " Rhino Render", and with Gamma Values set to 2.2 with Linear Workflow enabled.
3- use the same Displaymode (Attached Pender.ini)

after switching to Shaded and return back to Pender, I get the ground plane to work but with a darker exposure.

Files for Testing Below:

box.3dm (292.3 KB)
Pender.ini (12.9 KB)

Please post your WIP SystemInfo details.

Thanks

Note : disabled the 3rd party plugins didn’t solve the problem either

That was worth checking, thanks.

I see you’re trying to run 2 screens with only enough VRAM for 1.
Another easy test is to unplug the 2nd monitor, reboot, and try your test with just the built in screen.

Better or different?

I’m able to repeat the problem in Win 10 on a system with enough VRAM for 2 monitors, so that’s probably not it.

The developer has asked me to file a report for him.

Atleast I see Ambient shadow, but still having a black box!

that got me excited, only to see that shaded horizong appear on my ground plane

I’m headed home to test it on my Big GPU will let you know

https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-74862/Box-red-in-V7-and-black-in-V8

When I select the black box in V8, then while selected it does display red.

Thanks for the report and files to duplicate the problem.

Thank you John, This covers the first half of the issue, the second half is concerning the groundplane, see below:

It is mostly related to the shadows and the dreaded horizon appearing on V8, I recorded a video to exhibit the undesirable effect.

Attached my Pender.ini for consistent testing

We’ll probably need to work these issues separately.
I’m not involved in this development so I don’t know if they might be related.

I did just get a notice that the red/black V7/V8 issue is next up.

When that’s fixed we’ll take a look again.
Thanks

in the meantime, I’ll keep my eyes open for any progress.
Thank you

Tay

Did you install rendering software? That can change your color profile somehow.

I do have V-Ray , but I disabled it for the sake of this report, I made sure to keep “Rhino Render” as my default renderer for both cases.

This was not true:
Using other Bella rendering, I noticed my color profile changed when I installed it.

It does change few things, that’s why for any troubleshooting, I’d just disable the plugins.

it should only have any effect when bella is set as the current renderer; please let me know if you see otherwise

RH-74862 is fixed in the latest WIP

I confirm this is resolved, thank you.
Otherwise, the ground plane issue still persists, which I’m going to report in detail under a separate thread.

One time in Rhino 7 I was in top view, and I rotate the camera. I can´t remember if was orthogonal or if I set it to perspective. But a camera culling or clipping plane as you show was visible. I search for it (bug, thread) but I did not find it. Was related to an orthogonal camera and not the perspective one.

If you can remember which file you had this issue with. Look it up. Other people will thank you for reporting it.
