Tiled bump texture on ring

RING 4 with leather XS texture Bump.3dm (2.5 MB) Hi, any advice would be most appreciated. Trying to assign the default ‘leather XS’ bump texture to a surface. I have tried to map it using the cylinder option but it is still coming up as tiled. Please see screen shots and file attached. Thank you

It’s not that the texture tiles, but instead the mapping comes from a box, therefore showing a seam. Your problem comes form the “WCS/OCS Box only” setting of the leather bump map. To make adjustments, you need to change the material type from Metal to Custom in order to control the bump map better (material remains good to use no worry). Then scroll and change that to “WCS/OCS”, and go back to the mapping tab to cancel all previous mappings. It should now display seamless. You can control the size of the bump by changing the "repeat"setting.

you are truly amazing. thank you brother.

Ok so after carefully following your awesome video production, I got most of the way but it stops at thin vertical lines… The only thing that I didn’t replicate from your performance was clicking on the automatically fix something option that came up in the map box

I also redid the geometry using loft as it was messy before

But are you happy with the result of the mapping? Now you can delete all previous ones applied to the surface, and you should be able to tune it again from the mapping panel

I cannot get the leather pattern. I followed your instructions to a T but still no go. I am sorry, are you able to help me why it doesn’t look like your result? thank you again StuSurface Stack.3dm (2.7 MB)

I can see in your file the parts are “polysurfaces”. This can make texturing somehow harder where edges connect. So here what I did step by step:

  • extracted the edges and rebuild them to have smooth curves.
  • use lofts to redraw the surface as single edge less elements.
  • grabed a tilable png bump map from google
  • apply then a cylinder mapping
  • all the way down in the texture mapping box, I control texture size with the numbers in UVW Repeat boxes.
  • control leather color with the standard wheel.

This way you can forget about the whole WCS mapping troubles.
Since the surface is smooth, you could also use “surface mapping” without applying anything and control the repeat pattern numbers for each surface to set the size the way you want.

Again, a good thing to keep in mind is to have simple elements to work with. In this case, having single surface makes texturing easier to control than polysurfaces.

Good luck!
