Technical view drops lines in output

Hi all,

I’m still encountering a lot of issues exporting (vector) pdfs from a layout using technical view. This has been an issue for a while now (see here or here). Sometimes curves “show through,” but more commonly for me, curves are missing.

In a highly complex design, it’s not feasible to go in and first find, then re-draw (by hand), every missing curve in something like Illustrator post-export.

Here’s one example, but I run into it all the time:

Model space technical view (no hidden lines):

Layout space technical view (no hidden lines):

Output:

I can’t upload the model for confidentiality reasons but here is my systeminfo:

Hi Sam -

We can’t troubleshoot issues like this from images. Since you are running into this all the time, hopefully one of those cases occurs in a file that can be uploaded to us?

Makes sense. I’m having trouble replicating exactly, but here’s a similar example that’s maybe the same root cause?

In this example (not true of the initial post, those missing lines aren’t intersections), what’s not showing seem to be intersection lines, especially where a curved surface meets a flat one. The display mode settings have intersection lines set to object’s color, width of 1:

There’s also another thing happening here, which is a bunch of lines (almost looks like mesh polygons) showing up along the lofted surface, some persistent, some only showing up when the camera is at a steep enough angle:

Here’s the example model, let me know if I can help track this down further somehow!

Hi Sam -

Thanks for that file.
When I open that here, all details are in the Wireframe display mode, indicating that you are using a custom display mode that is not on my system.

When I use the default Technical display mode with hidden lines turned off, I’m getting those intersections here:

I’ve put this on the list as RH-97940 Display: Technical: Extra Lines on Srf
In my tests, when turning of creases in the technical display mode, the persistent ones went away.

Your file also shows a regression in Rhino 9 where seams of extrusion objects are drawn in the Technical display mode. This issue is now filed as RH-97939 Display: Extrusion Seams Show in Technical

Ok noted. For the record, I’m doing this all in Rhino 8, but maybe what you’re saying is some of this is fixed in 9?

Also if it helps, here’s the custom display mode – maybe this all boils down to me missing a checkbox somewhere. Let me know if it’s that simple :grimacing:

Hi Sam -

No. I said there’s a new bug in Rhino 9 that wasn’t there in Rhino 8.

I can look at that next week but did you try the factory-default display mode?

Hi Sam -

Yes, you didn’t check the intersections option…

As for the extra lines that are getting drawn, this is not something that a display mode can fix. You’ll need to rebuild the surfaces for those to go away.

Awesome. Love when it’s my own error, thank you for helping me track it down – appreciate the help!
