SUBD edge loop gumball improvement

Why is the gumball for these edge loops almost always facing such wierd directions? I don’t expect it to be perfect, but even just a reasonable approximation of the geometry would be fine. Can this be improved or is this just how it is? I’m constantly having to realign the gumball to work with geometry that’s off-axis.

Selecting this edge loop:

Whereas I’d expect something more like:

There’s also no memory of changes to gumball. I’m making rotation and scale adjustments to those edge loops and every single time I need to re-orient the gumball to rotate those loops rougly on their plane. How do you work like this or am I missing something?

Also if I relocate the gumball then use the gumball and undo the operation it also resets the gumball. Why!? This is so tedious & fiddly to work with.

Is this something that’s going to be improved in V9 or is this not an issue for anyone?

Hi @ftzuk ,

Sub-object selection sets don’t recall a custom GB alignment as you know. This is something I’ve been lobbying for internally and I’ll bring your request to the developer’s attention that is working in this area as well here ( @Joshua_Kennedy ).

The by object alignment on these edge loops is aligning one axis to the main plane of the loop but neither of the other two is normal to that which I agree would be more helpful. I’ve filed this as https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-86215 too.

Something that might help depending on how you want to edit these loops is the Align command with the ToFitPlane option to flatten. Then Slide to move the loop along the SubD.

Replied there, thanks.
