Sketch objects always want to initiate from a unwanted location

New user here. Rhino Tech support has pushed me over to the forum. I’m seeing an odd problem where when I’m trying to draw a new basic object (line, rectangle, etc) and Rhino forces it to start in an unwanted location, nowhere near where I’m wanting it. It refuses to start where I’m clicking. Is that behavior being driven by some unwanted filter?

Unless you’re experiencing something less common, make sure you study what Osnap and grid snap are/do.

On a different note and/or to understand your problem better, is this happening when you’re drawing a new object in a blank rhino document or a new object after other objects have been drawn ?

Rene,

Yes I think the problem is that the “center” OSNAP button takes precedence over any other filter setting. Not sure why but turning that off and selecting near helps. To me it is obvious that when you are pointing at an existing line and clicking that your new geometry should at least be anchored to that line. I have to say that it is much more difficult than I expected to come from Solid Works over to Rhino. I don’t yet understand how to approach things in Rhino. Rhino can do very powerful things in a simple way but it can’t execute simple things in a simple way. How to “select” and “build” off an existing piece of geometry like starting a sketch on a face is very elusive.

Try turning Cursor tool tips on with Osnap checked to see which Osnap is being used.

The Rhino cursor will start on the Cplane unless it snaps to an existing object or elevator mode is used. After starting to create an object if Planar mode is on then the cursor wil stay at the same elevation above the Cplane unless it snapes to an existing object or elevator mode is used.

Working in perspective mode may be confusing because the cursor moves parallel to the Cplane unless something explicitly moves it differently.

Other ways for the cursor not seeming to respond as expected include having Ortho mode or Grid Snap mode on when not intended. Occasionally I toggle Planar mode off by typing P thinking I was in a command with P turning an option, but not being in a command.

Rhino works differently than some other software, Sometimes experience with other software can slow down learning to use Rhino. A bit of time looking through the User’s Guide and Tutorials may be worthwhile. Rhino - Rhino Support

In addition to the basic Osnaps there are numerous others including ones for picking a point on a surface, polysurface or mesh face.
