"Shadows Only" does not work in Rendered display mode

Hi Rhino world!
I just downloaded Rhino 8 and I’m having some issues with the display modes. In the “Rendered” Display mode the objects will not cast shadows unless the ground plane is visible. Basically, the “Shadows Only” option, that turns the ground plane invisble, doesn’t seem to be working. This bug also affects some custome display mode settings that I’ve created. Does anyone have a fix for this? I’ve included two screen shots of the display setting and their results. The first is from Rhino 7 the second is from Rhino 8.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
David

Hi David - as far as I can see, this does work here in the latest -

image

can you please run SystemInfo in Rhino and copy/paste ther results here?

Hi Pascal,
Thank you for the responce.Below is the information you asked for. Let me know if you need something different. Also, for what it’s worth, my UI doesn’t look like yours. How did you get the view tabs on the side of the window?

Cheers,
David

ATTENTION:
Desktop is using the slower, less reliable integrated graphics device and probably needs a configuration change.

An accelerated graphics device exists and is attached to a monitor, but it’s not being used by Rhino.

  • Recommended: Use Windows’ Display Settings to configure the monitor attached to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, to be the “Main Display”.
  • Any hardware configuration or cabling changes you make will require that you restart Rhino.

Hi David - I would first update the graphics drivers with the latest from Nvida and Intel.

-Pascal

Hi Pascal,
Thank you for the suggestions. I’ve updated the drivers for NVIDIA Intel and I’m still having the same issues. Do you have any other suggestions?

Cheers,
David

Have you tried this suggestion from the SystemInfo output? Once you have done that restart Rhino. Any better?

This forum post has the details for reconfiguring your Windows display adapters:

Hi Nathan,
Great suggestion! A few weeks before upgrading we had some work done on the HVAC system our office. They had to move my desk, which I knew about ahead of time, but they must have done something with my computer because one of my monitors was no longer plugged into the card. It didn’t resolve the issue but it’s definitely good to know!

Hi John,
Thank you for the response. I followed your steps and everything was already set to “high preformance”.
Do you have any other suggestions?

Cheers,
David

I am using a Rhino 8 SR4 2024-1-8 (Rhino 8, 8.4.24008.10001, a couple days old.
My Laptop has a 4GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti with embarrassing old drivers.

This is what I see in Rhino 8:

Also in Properties → Display model → Rendered:

:
On the same computer, Rhino 7 looks like this:

and Rhino 7 options:

@dsaldoff Can you post an updated System Info?
And in Options → PlugIns, can you disable plugins that do not ship with Rhino?
Vray may be the only one that you have, but an important one to disable while you are having issues.

Sincerely,
Mary Ann Fugier

Hi Mary Ann,
unchecking the 2 vray Plug-ins Fixed the issue!!! Thank you! Will I need them in the future or can i just leave them unchecked? Also, please find my current System Info Below and let me know any other thoughts you have.

Cheers,
David

Hahaha. I definietly need them checked to use Vray, but turning them off did solve the issue. Please let me know next steps when you get a chance

Hi -

As you identified this issue as being related to V-Ray, you’d need to contact Chaos Group for help. Make sure the the version you are running is compatible with Rhino 8.

suggest to use directional light.
