Saving causes Rhino 6 to not respond

Hi,
Every time in the past few days I have not been able to save my rhino files. It just stops responding and gives me no error codes. The only way I can get out of it is to force close the program. There are autosave files but I am unable to save as, save small, or regular save. I tried updating my nvidia and intel drivers also updated windows and rhino. My license is not expired. Does anyone know what could be wrong and how to fix it?? Thank you

Welcome @lenardln
Please run the Rhino command _SystemInfo and post the results here.

Hi Laura
Try repairing the Rhino 6 install: Start Menu > Settings > Apps > Rhino 6 > Modify > Repair

2021-02-05_15-10-58

Okay, just tried that but it didn’t work either.

Hello - are you saving to the local hard drive, a network, or a synced folder like DropBox etc? Does it work to save to the desktop?

-Pascal

I usually save to a local hard drive. I just tried to save it to the desktop but it still crashed.

Hello - if it hangs and does not crash, please do this:

While Rhino is in this state, start windows Task Manager and locate Rhino in the Processes page

Select it, right click, and choose ‘Create dump file’. When it is done, it will tell you where that is - locate the file, Zip and upload it on www.rhino3d.com/upload to my (Pascal) attention. Please include a link back here in your comments.

-Pascal

When I attempt to right-click while Rhino is not responding, it doesn’t allow me to select “create dump file”. Should I attempt to do this before I attempt the saving in Rhino?

Hello - it looks like you have multiple Rhinos running, is that correct? Click that arrow and see - do you exepct all of these? If not, I’d close all of these, (with End Task) and start over, maybe after a reboot with only one Rhino running. Maybe reboot as well for good measure.
I see you have VRay and Lands - if the problem persists, please disable these in Options > PLug-ins page and close and restart Rhino. Does it still happen? And when/if it does, does it happen if you make a brand new file, make a box and Save?

-Pascal

image
Once I clicked the arrow I was able to create a dump file but now I am having trouble uploading it to the link you posted because it is telling me the form isn’t secure and when I tell it to send anyway it does nothing. Is there another way I can send you the zip file? Also, just for reference, I included the picture of the rhino drop-down arrow. I am unsure of why all of the vray files are open and I also don’t know how to fix that, besides just disabling the plug-in. Also, I don’t think I want to disable Lands because I am directly using it in this file.

Hello - so, the save problem is related to one particular file, correct? If Rhino crashes saving it, then presumably there is nothing to be lost in opening it without Lands and Vray running and seeing if the save works. Please disable Lands and Vray, reboot the machine, to clear the decks, and open the file and see if you can save it.

-Pascal

So, I just tried that and it, unfortunately, didn’t work. I did also create a new Rhino file with simple geometry and it allowed me to save. I then tried to save a file that has much more complex work in it and it allowed me to save. But when I go back to the autosave file I have been attempting to save, it still doesn’t work. Could it somehow be related to it being an autosave file?

Hello - so to be sure: without Lands and Vray , you opened the file but could not save, correct? Can you please start Rhino and run Audit3dmFile on this file and attach the results?

-Pascal

Correct, with both Lands and Vray disabled, it didn’t save.
Here is the audit info

The object table was too many characters to include. Do you need this info? Also, I don’t know if this really solves my problem because it may still happen in the future, but I was able to copy the content of the file into a blank file and it allowed me to save. So, I guess that is always an option if this does happen again

Can you run Audit3dmFile on both and save these to text files? I am curious about what the difference might be.

Here are both the audit text files

Thanks - Autosave has a lot more objects

1173 objects with 6 plug-in data items, 9740784 bytes (offset 585911 to 10326695)

vs.
610 objects with 6 plug-in data items, 4413976 bytes (offset 316075 to 4730051)

were there hidden or off objects when you dumped everything over to the new file?

It looks like these were in block definitions. Does the new file you created look correct when opened with Lands and Vray enabled?

-Pascal

It looks the same but maybe there are less objects because I copied and pasted with both plug-ins disabled. But no, there weren’t any hidden or off objects.
