Rhino7 jagged shadow issue

Hi,

I’m using Rhino7 Educational and have recently encountered an issue with jagged shadows. The problem seems to have started about a week ago.

As shown in the image above, the shadows appear jagged.

This second image is from the same modeling file, and the shadows looked fine before.

I’ve tried adjusting almost every option in the display mode settings, but nothing has resolved the issue. The “Camera Based Clipping Bubble” option seemed to help slightly, but it didn’t fully solve the problem.

I’m wondering if anyone could help me understand the cause of this issue and suggest a potential solution. Should I consider reinstalling Rhino7?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

shadows are dependent on the overall scene boundingbox, and your display settings. Did you modify the defaults? Best is to share a file that illustrates the issue.

Hi,

I don’t believe I’ve modified the default settings in the meantime.

I’ve attached some files that might help to understand the issue:

Render_HQ.ini (14.2 KB)
systeminfo.txt (2.8 KB)
issue file.3dm (9.6 MB)

Every display mode that includes shadows is showing the same issue. The original file was too large to attach, so I’ve included a different file that exhibits the same problem.

I suspect that the issue may be related to the relative scale of the objects.

In the first image, the shadow looks fine when only one object is visible.
However, as seen in the second image, when all other objects are unhidden, the shadows become jagged.
In the third image, when there is only one object with a relatively fitting plane, the shadows appear fine.
But in the fourth image, the same object with a relatively large plane causes the shadows to look jagged. The plane isn’t excessively large—it’s only about 8000 sqm. When I scale the object up so that its size is more comparable to the plane, the shadows are not jagged.

This issue persists even with a 10 MB file size and different models, as seen in the fifth and sixth images.

In summary, I assume the problem is related to the relative scale of the objects, but I’m unsure how to resolve it. Fortunately, this issue only occurs in the viewport and does not affect rendering.

I hope this information is helpful in understanding the situation.

Thank you.

hi @DongjuHan like you already concluded, the relative size of objects is what matters. Shadows are based on shadow maps that are allocated to the entire scene boundingbox. So if you have a relatively large plane and start focussing on a small object, your shadows will not be sharp, even at the highest settings.

In this case I recommend not to use that plane, but rather the build in _Groundplane . This will give you sharp shadows:

The problem is now resolved thanks to you.
