Rhino WIP Feature: Improved Creation and Editing of Hatch Boundaries

Note : This guide requires the Rhino 9 WIP. This is a work in progress meaning that it is meant for testing and should not be used for project critical production work. The Rhino 9 WIP is available to anyone that owns Rhino 8.

New Hatch object boundaries in Rhino 9 WIP can now be created in multiple planes. Also hatch boundaries can be edited in many ways without having to delete and remake hatches..

Creating new hatches

  • Select a Planar Surface to create a new hatch.

  • Curves on multiple planes are now grouped by the plane they sit on. This allows multiple hatches to be created on any plane of the input curves.

Editing Existing hatch boundaries

  • Split command works on Hatches. This results in two or more hatches.
  • Deform Hatch with the commands:
    • Shear
    • Bend
    • Taper
    • Stretch
    • Flow Along Curve
  • Untrim commands also allow boundaries of hatches to the removed, while keeping other boundaries:
    • UntrimAll
    • UntrimBorder
    • UntrimHoles

Details about creating Hatches and additional hatch properties can be found in the Hatch Help Topic.

Split hatch is part of the original announcement above.

I hope that someday I will be able to make a hatch on surfaces that are not planar. It would make my work much easier.

After having used Model Hatch in Grasshopper 8 pretty extensively now, I understand that a Hatch is just a Surface since thats the best input to give to the Model Hatch component. Maybe it wasnt earlier, but now that we have untrim and split, in my head they are just surfaces with patterns.

If they are based on surfaces, it shouldn’t be impossible to make hatches non-planar, as the person above has suggested. Stuff like hatch patterns and basepoint can follow the surface uv.
