The same material in my school computer’s Rhino will display polished metal as it looks polished. But if I work at home I apply the same material, it will be displayed as a satin lookalike finish. I need to manually adjust all the pre-set polished metal materials one by one each time. See the difference below. Why it’s happening and what settings can I adjust to prevent it from showing differently on different computers?
Do you have a minimum working example (a chain link will do) you can attach here?
We tested it again in class today. 13 people opened the exact same .3dm file in the link below. Within Raytraced view, the file on two people’s screens showed a matt finish in both Raytraced view and the rendered jpg file. The remaining 11 people can view the original polished finish in their Raytraced view and rendered file. What does the finish look like on your computer when you open the file and look at it in Raytraced view? How can we change the settings so everyone views the same file in the same way that was originally designed? Thank you!

Change Custom material to Metal and it will look the same on all machines. Other than that to have the custom material behave like a metal its diffuse color should be set to black, otherwise it should behave like the first ring.
I see it works. But why do some people need to manually either change the material from “Custom” to “Metal” , or change the color from white to black? Is there any setting we need to change for all computers to function the same? If a client sends a file, how do I know whether it’s customized as it is shown or if I need to manually change it in the first place?
I don’t know why some machines show the materials incorrectly, but best is to stick with the precanned material types (metal, paint, gem, glass, plastic) for most consistent opening between different machines. And when you need to customize materials more than these provide then you should prefer the Physically Based material and forget about the Custom material type, especially since Rhino 7.
