Rhino ignoring first keypress of typed content on mac

Super annoying. I’m running 10.10 on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), and after upgrading to Yosemite, the command box doesn’t ever get the first key i type. My muscle memory is so ingrained that it’s impossible to re-train myself to type space or dot first just to make sure the box is selected properly. Is this a terrible mode or something? Can I have the old way back, where if i wanted to move something, i could just type ‘move’ from anywhere, rather than ‘mmove’; ‘circle’ instead…
