There seems to be an issue in Rhino 8 for macOS - I’m currently on 8.7 (8.7.24138.15432, 2024-05-17) on Sonoma -, when switching from one “view” or panel to another and you start typing to enter a specific command.
Now, when the start of the command (i.e. first character) conflicts with a default macOS system keyboard shortcut, the macOS specific key bound action happens, before you can finish inputting the Rhino command.
I’ve noticed this quite frequently in Rhino 8 now, but wasn’t able to faithfully reproduce it.
To reproduce:
switch from a 4 perspective viewport panel layout with the Top view active to an existing layout by double-clicking it in the Layout panel, docked to the bottom right of the Rhino window
once the layout view pops up, immediately start typing for instance export
the Emoji & Symbols window from the macOS menu bar should pop up straight away, when you hit E
This behavior isn’t exclusive to the above case, but instead happens quite often.
I guess it has to do with view switching and Rhino thus becoming inactive as an application, or something.
When typing in a command starting with a lower case “e” (i.e. Extract, Extrude) it brings up the Apple Character Viewer dialog.
I realize this may be a Mac System Keyboard Settings issue but I haven’t figured out a way around disabeling it. I’m hoping someone else has!
I’ve been trying to reproduce the problem, and think you’ve found it!
When I stay in the viewport, it doesn’t happen, but if I click outside (LAYERS, or PROPERTIES panels), then type “e”, then it happens.
That is exactly what the bug report logged in May 2024 mentions. It has not been fixed, so you need to make sure that those panels do not have the focus when you start typing commands starting with an e.
