Rhino 8 won't open some files and others opening slowly

Really need some help with my final uni project here. Everything was running fine and I could open and edit files as needed this morning. This evening I attempted to open one of my files and Rhino gets stuck on the loading screen and eventually stops responding, no matter how long it is left for (see screenshot attached for reference).

My main file is made up of imported blocks for each floor, so the files aren’t that large overall. My PC is having no problems with RAM etc. Some files are able to open, with even the largest file actually opening more quickly than others (this file is 52mb).

I am using V-Ray for rendering and even with this disabled, the same issue arises. However, when V-Ray is enabled it seems to get stuck on the ‘migrating 0 legacy materials’ part of the code, which repeats itself over and over. Annoyingly, I can’t see the code part any longer when trying to open the file so I can’t attach a screenshot of this.

Please can someone help with this, my deadline is in two weeks and I would really really appreciate any input on this.

Hi Sophie - please run SystemInfo in Rhino and coipy/paste the results here.
Was the ‘ok’ opening and editing this morning on the same machine as the bad stuff in the evening?

-Pascal

Hi Pascal, thanks so much for getting back to me. Same machine as this morning, nothing seems to have changed. Here is the system info:

Hi Sophie - I would update the video drivers from the Intel and NVidia websites, just to e\liminate that as a factor, I don’t necessarily think it will fix the problem on its own.

When you disable Vray, are you doing this by first unchecking ‘Enabled’, in OPtions > Plug-ins page, for the VRay plug-in and then closing Rhino and reopening it? All with only one Rhino open at a time?

-Pascal

Hi pascal,

I have updated the drivers but that doesn’t seem to be helping.

Yes that what I was trying, I made sure to restart rhino before trying to open the file again. It seems to be files with more vray materials in that I’m having the most trouble with.

Thanks
Sophie

Managed to get a screenshot of repeated command it seems to get stuck on. See attached image. Thanks

Hi Sophie - my guess of the moment is, that if you are attaching, as blocks, multiple files wiith, potentially, many vray materials and many of the same vray materials, that this is bogging things down. We do not have Vray here to test with, unfortunately but I will ask some smarter people if my wild guess is anywhere near likely.

-Pascal

Hi Pascal, thanks for your reply. This issue is also happening on individual files not just on the file that has all of the blocks linked in.

Please could you let me know if anyone else has any ideas? Thanks in advance

I’ve had a go at opening one of the individual files in revit and then exporting as an .obj. The .obj will open in rhino perfectly so I’m feeling it may be an issue with the vray materials - just hoping that i can get to a point where i can access the files again and strip any materials so i can continue to work on it.

Hi Sophie - your best bet is probably to contact Vray support -

Hi Pascal, im unable to make a post in the V-Ray support forum as I currently have the trial and you need a paid version to be able to make posts. Please would you be able to put me in contact with anyone you know who would be able to support with vray?

Or, could I please send you my files to see if they open without vray? Even if I could get them back without the materials being on them that would be a massive help, but im currently unable to open even more files than earlier.

Hi Sophie - you can upload to Rhino - Upload to Support Please include a link back to this topic in your comments and SaveSmall and Zip files if they are large.

-Pascal

Thanks Pascal, will upload them now. Unfortunately I can’t get into some of the files to SaveSmall, but will zip them where I can. Will link back to this topic and leave a comment here once uploaded.

Thanks,
Sophie.

Have just uploaded a zip file containing the 7 individual files and 1 file which contains them all as links

Hi Sophie - taking a long time to open here as well - it may just be creating meshes - I’ll see what I can figure out.
@Sophie_James - the file hangs here too - I was able to get a memory dump, I’ll try to get one of the smart people here to look at it.

Hi Pascal,

Thank you so much for cleaning up the file you sent me. I’m now able to open it with no issues at all so hopefully will be able to get back on track!

Thanks so much for your help - massively appreciated!

Sophie

I’m having this problem too lately.
I’m not sure what’s happening, but a 65mb model gets stuck on a black screen with nothing happening. I decided to restart my pc and try rhino safe mode and it managed to open. Then i tried again but it kept getting stuck until it didn’t. I’ve seen this behavior too with worksessions where the opening gets stuck on creating meshes for too long.

Hi Johan,

are there Cosmos Materials? sounds similar to this one…

yup. Maybe some models too.

What would be the solution to this problem? Right now i’m not able to open certain files while rhino 7 files open without any issue.
