Rhino 8 randomly undoes all my settings every few days

Dear Rhino community,

Something strange and frustrating has been happening. Every so often, my Rhino 8 will lose all my custom settings: appearances, aliases, keyboard, mouse, custom display modes will all be reset. It will happen in the middle of work sessions, switching between applications, and generally in subtle moments without my understanding why. I thought it was when I would open DWG’s in Rhino 8 or when I would open Rhino 7 files from colleagues that would trigger the re-set but this doesn’t seem to be the cause. It just happened again and I am at a loss. I wonder if anyone has any insight.

The only hint is that each time it resets, I am left with three Shaded views in my Display Modes menu (see screenshot). Some of my custom display modes are copies of the default Shaded view so I don’t know if that might have something to do with it.

Any insight is appreciated. I tried the method of having my settings copied in the AppData/Roaming/… /settings also without success.

Hi Lucas -

I’m not sure what that method is exactly but you can OptionsExport to get most things saved to a text file and OptionsImport to get them back if things go South. But next time this happens, please use Reset and click the button to save the settings for support - send the zip file to tech@mcneel.com with a link back to this topic in your comments.

Meantime, plase run SystemInfo in Rhino and copy/paste the results here.

Thank you, Pascal
OptionsExport and OptionsImport will already help a great deal. Didn’t know about that. Previously I was following the method outlined in this post: Rhino settings backup in RH8

Hi Lucas - it would be useful to know if this happens without VRay being loaded - if you can work without it for a while, disable it in Options > Plug-ins page and then close and restart Rhino. Can you work for a while without the bad thing happening, when it probably would have happened by now in the past?

-Pascal

Hi Pascal,

The options reset happens at very irregular intervals. Sometimes two days in a row, sometimes it will be ok for a couple weeks without the reset. I think it might be hard to do a controlled troubleshooting disabling Vray since I often need to use Vray several times during a given week.

I will try it and pay attention when I turn Vray back on

Luca

The issue just occurred again - for the first time since this original posting eight days ago.

OptionsImport saved me the headache of redoing my settings so I am grateful for that tip. But the issue of losing my settings remains a mystery. I cannot trace it directly to Vray since I have been using vray fairly often throughout these past eight days.

I sent the zip file of the settings after the Reset command to the tech email.

Hi Luca - can you please, when you get things sorted again, export the good settings in th same way?

-Pascal

It happens to me every time I close and reopen Rhino. So annoying!! Have been using the trial version for a couple of weeks now.

Our office has been having the same issue with display styles, aliases, settings etc all randomly resetting. Using OptionsExport/Import is helping to speed up the reset but it’s not ideal. Let me know what I can do to help diagnose the issue. Thanks

Seemingly I also share some of these issues where I notice that my viewport colors keeps reseting after reboots. I am running Rhino 8 licensed on Macbook Pro 2019. Let me know if I could supply any further info for the debug team to diagnose the issue.

Thank you and best regards!

Hej Josef -

Does that mean that you can shut down Rhino and then start Rhino again and the viewport colors will be as they were, but when you reboot the machine and start Rhino, the viewport colors have changed?

Please run the Rhino SystemInfo command and copy-paste the result here.
-wim

Hi Wim,

Apologies for my delayed reply, thank you for your attention to the issue. It happened sometimes after the machine was rebooted or shut down. Have not had any problems with just restarting Rhino and having viewports colors change.

However I have not noticed it happening anymore so maybe its fixed via macOS or Rhino update but also been off for Holidays so have not been that active.

I will return if I notice it again, nevertheless here is my SystemInfo:
