Rhino 8 nvidia graphics not recognised

Hello everyone, I am using Rhino 8. I am having trouble with the shadows not being visible in my viewport. I have checked various forums and even asked for help to chat gpt, tried everything from updating the driver manager to reinstalling Rhino, but nothing seems to work. Can anyone help me figure out what the issue might be?

i m HAVING GeForce RTX 3070

Hi Hemani,

This is a windows issue, typically seen on machines that have been upgraded from windows 10.

Go to the Windows Device Manager and try enabling/disabling your display adapters.

A clean install of the Nvidia driver is recommended.

DRIVER INSTALLATION

  1. Open the Nvidia Driver that you downloaded and let it extract the files and folders.
  2. Accept the licence agreement.
  3. Select “CUSTOM”.
  4. Install what you need but preferably just the graphics driver so there’s less chance of error.
  5. Make sure “Clean installation” is checked.
  6. Let the installation begin!

Dear Japhy,

I have followed all the steps you mentioned. I adjusted the Nvidia settings for Rhino preferences in both the Nvidia 3D manager and in the graphics settings of the PC. I also reinstalled Rhino and performed a clean installation procedure for the driver. However, it still shows that no graphics are being recognized. As a result, I am unable to have shadows of my model for my outdoor thermal comfort studies.

I have attached screenshots for reference.

Rhino is just reading the state of Windows in this case. Enabling/Disabling the graphics device, updating windows and drivers is the only method I know of to resolve this.

Hi Memani -

I’d follow the steps outlined in this post, making sure not to hop over step 3: uninstall the device:

Why have you disabled the AMD device?

The AMD GPU is the primary device on your laptop, and in many cases, disabling the primary device on a laptop can cause all kinds of other issues when it comes to device detection and selection in Windows.

I would re-enable the AMD GPU from within the Device Manager, reboot, and see if things work.
