Rhino 8 Not responding

Dear Fellow Developers,

I worked on Rhino 8/ Grasshopper on Friday and it all went well. (This version on my system, it has been working well for months)

After a weekend I just found it not responding at all - that means whatever I click, there is no response. I tried the following actions:

  1. Exit the software and try to restart. Then a window pop out saying there is an update. So I cliked update software.
  2. Restart the computer
  3. Re-install the software
  4. Run as administrator
  5. Install clean version of NVIDIA studio driver

None of the above works.

Here is my systyem info as below:

  • Windows 10 Enterprise
  • 64-bit operating system

Here is how the devise manger look like in display adapter:

Can anyone please provide some suggestions on what to do next? Any suggestions you provided would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!

Best regards,
Yvonne

Hi Yvonne,

Are you saying that you can run Rhino, it starts, but then nothing happens if you click on elements of the program? Or that you cannot get Rhino to start at all?

Try opening Rhino in Safe Mode (via Windows start)

Once open run systemInfo (post), then disable any 3rd party plugin via File>Properties>Plugins

You can sort by Plugins that do not ship with Rhino like so…

Hi Jeremy,

Thank you for replying. yes, I can run Rhino, just no response after I have opened it. not even the ‘Minimise’, ‘Maximise’, ‘Close’ button

Thank you Japhy. I tried your method, but it seems that I still cannot disable the plugins. As after launching, there is no response when clicking ‘File’ or any other functions. Any ideas?

PS: now that I installed Rhino 7, it seems working fine. But Rhino 8 won’t work.

is it possible to run system info while in Safe Mode?

a few thing to try…

Repairing Rhino via Add or Remove programs > Modify > Repair

Manually creating a dmp file and sending to Support Manually Creating a Memory Dump (DMP File) from an Unresponsive Rhino for Windows [McNeel Wiki]

Repair your .net runtimes (right click, change repair), then repair Rhino again.

Thank you Japhy, i tried to repair Rhino and repair .net runtimes. all not working.
I have now uploaded the DMP file to the website.

Thanks, the dmp was inconclusive.

Do have access to Rhino 7? curious if that would work.

Another think we can try is to add a /netfx to the shortcut like so. I suspect this has to do with the .net

Hello Japhy,

thank you again! I do have Rhino 7 and it works fine now. Just Rhino 8 won’t respond.
I also tried to add /netfx in the shortcut, it seems not helping…unfortunately.

Please run SystemInfo in the Rhino 7 command line and post the result.

Thanks

I am sorry for my late response.
Please find the Rhino System Information as below:
Thank you very much!!

Hi -

Remote Desktop is not a supported platform for Rhino.
-wim

Hello Wim,
Thank you for your reply. The remote desktop normally works fine… although now Rhino 8 won’t respond anyway.

Please see the information below when I work on this desktop and running systeminfo in Rhino 7.

Please do you have any suggestions on how to get Rhino 8 working ?
@wim @Japhy

Thank you very much!

Best regards,
Hongyan

Hi -

That looks significantly different than the Rhino 8 output. Are you saying that when you don’t do anything else now, and run SystemInfo in Rhino 8 again, that this will again tell us you are running under Remote Desktop?
-wim

Try disconnecting your SpaceMouse (or uncheck the plugin).
