Rhino 8 keeps crashing when I use the ClippingPlane Command

My Rhino 8 keeps crashing when I use the ClippingPlane command. It never did this before, so I’m very confused. It only crashes when I click on the ClippingPlane I already created or when I click on the properties tab after clicking on the ClippingPlane. I believe my software is up to date and I restarted and cleaned up my laptop to try to fix it, but was met with no luck. Please let me know if you need my file to see what’s wrong.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi Thea, Please run SystemInfo in the Rhino command line and post your results. Thanks

hi @Thea1 you should update your graphics drivers first, and then see if the problem persists.

Hi Gijs, I’m trying to update my graphics driver but an error on my computer keeps popping up. I’ll give it time and try again, will let you know. Thank you for your help!

What’s the error message?

Thea -

What is the error message that is popping up on the clipping plane click? Is it still happening?

On a new model with just a sphere does the same thing happen? Or is it only on certain models?

With more research this may be a GPU tessellation issue.

Please try and go to Tools > Options > View > OpenGL and un-check GPU tesselation. Then restart Rhino and see if clipping planes start acting normal?

Hi @Thea1

Just following up here… Did you follow Scott’s suggestion of unchecking the “GPU Tessellation” option? And did it work (i.e. no more crashing)?

Thanks,
-Jeff

Clipping planes were causing a crash for me too every time at a certain point. Unchecking GPU tesselation seemed to fix the issue. Working on Surface Laptop Studio 2 with Nvidia GForce RTX 4060. Thanks for this!

We think we have fixed this issue in 8.10. You can get the release candidate for 8.10 by following the instructions in the following post

been having the same issue, strangely only this past week, full crash with clipping planes, cnt+alt+del woudnt even open, had to completely switch off computer. Tried updating drivers etc etc, thankfully found this chat and this latest WIP build seems to have fixed the problem for me. Thanks Steve
