Rhino 8 freezes entire PC

Glad it is working.

The Revit <> OBJ issues are different. I am sure there are some ways that Rhino.inside.revit can assist in that process.

Let’s take a look at some samples to determine what is happening in detail with this Revit workflow? Having the original OBJs would help too as Rhino may import them different.

So I was excited to see this thread because I was having the same issue. RH8 with latest service release. The system freezes when I try to move, but not all the time. Most consistently when I have multiple files open that are linked to one another as blocks. As an example, I have a main file open working out site planning issues and site work, I also have a main building, an accessory building, and another accessory structure linked as blocks. I find that I need to modify one of the referenced models, so I open it and start to modify it, then I find I need to go back & forth. It seems that it’s when I start modifying linked models that the system begins to freeze. I finally closed all but the main file I need to work on and it has not frozen on me in like 2+ hours now. I’m now working with two files, a main file making 2d drawings that references a single file with many linked blocks (like 225 block references).

Hi mcarch,

Let’s start by running the SystemInfo command in the Rhino command line and posting the result. Thanks!

Thanks Japhy, I tried turning off GPU tessellation but that didn’t seem to make a difference - likely because I’m not working in render mode, only ghosted & wireframe. It hasn’t frozen up on me since I’ve been keeping only 2 files open. I hope the multiple monitors is not causing it partly . . .
here’s the systeminfo:

We should disable these for troubleshooting, particularly the ones referencing older versions of Rhino.

Go to File>Properties>Plugins and sort by Plugins that do not ship with Rhino & disable, then restart Rhino.

Thanks again for your help Japhy. I updated rhino to the latest service release last night, but it would not install automatically. I had go to rhino.com & download & run from downloaded file. It updated just fine. this morning worked on one file for a while first, no issues. opened two files, (wanted to ease into the load of working on multiple files) continued back & forth, making sure to save changes to base files & wait till it finished before I update block in second file. I added a third, then a fourth file I was working on. All was working fine for about 3 or 3.5 hrs. then I updated some print colors on a layer in a file that’s an linked block in a linked block, saved changes, waited for it to save, then went to file where block was linked to (first level up) & selected a clipping plane, then clicked update clipping drawing. It froze at about 12:43. The clock on the system locked at 12:57, I could not access anything on the system - the mouse would move but nothing responded. Finally windows asked if i wanted to end the process, I was able to hover the mouse(hourglass) over the yes button for a few seconds, then click once, & wait. Finally at 1:18, windows was able to “end the process” & it closed the file where I clicked “UpdateClippingDrawing”. The other two models are still open and everything is back to normal.

Let me know if I can provide anything further.
Cheers!

Thanks for the update, that was my next question, what exactly ‘freeze’ means. In the state you are getting into you can create a DMP file for analysis by following these instructions.

https://wiki.mcneel.com/rhino/manual_rhino_dmp_windows

note in step 6 to upload to mcneel please add a link to this thread as well in the comments, thanks

Thanks Japhy, I was able to make a .dmp file I think it was Thursday day night when it “froze up” again, slow going, but it created & I zipped it & uploaded with a description of events. it was like a 12GB file, 1.6GB zipped. It was right after I clicked update clipping drawing after making some changes to a linked block & saving those.

After it recovered, I ran a pending update on the Nvidia card & changed the refresh rate on my 4k monitor to eliminate some lag & thought that maybe with the nvidia update, plus I rebuilt the two main rhino files by opening a fresh document, then importing/linking the blocks & copying the other geometry in & purging all of the other linked files, I thought things could have been cleared up, but no dice . . . it froze again that night, but I let it catch up which it did, but it took several hours. I’m avoiding updating clipping drawings for now. I can do it the old drafting way for now . . . at least I don’t have to do it ink-on -mylar (which would be fun at a certain level . . .) Cheers!

You know, I just noticed, maybe it was the giant-poly vines I had turned on by mistake prior to hitting update clipping drawing . . . that may have done it I suppose. I just updated clipping drawing with anything I don’t need turned off. updated right away. I also have only had the drawing up for like 40 minutes or so today, plus the other times it froze, I did NOT have that hi-poly block on I’m pretty sure. I’ll update later on when I try updating again.
Thanks for all the help.
Cheers!

Hi -

Yes, from your description, Rhino is just very busy for a very long time…
-wim

Yep, so I think you guys can disregard the issue at this point. I think it was just too much geometry, I thought that if I just keep it turned off it would not load it, but it seems that it does load everything if you update linked blocks or open the file. I thought this project was small enough, but it seems I found the limit. I’ll have to still keep all the landscaping stuff in a separate file only for rendering . . . should be doing that as a matter of std. operating procedure no matter the proj. size.
Thanks for your help.
Cheers!

Well, I thought that was it, but it seems that the issue is in loading all of the linked blocks. I have nested linked blocks down to the screw level. The trouble file seems to be the File I’m making 2d drawings in using the linked files. It has been 90 minutes and it still has not loaded. It is even autosaving, but it still says “Creating Meshes” & importing entities, and my system is slowed down even typing here is lagging.

I am going to go back to working in Rh7 until we can straighten it out. I cannot move & I need to get this project out.

I do appreciate all of your help, but I’m not sure where to start now. I thought I had it solved by taking out the linked landscape (trees, shrubs) blocks, but maybe I cannot have references down to the level screws in the model either - or at least maybe not hundreds of them (I always have the layers turned off by the way).

One thing it keeps popping up is the block name conflict and somehow it is up to 20026-11GuestHouse2.01.3dm : T 04 but there is only one reference block showing up in block manager - is there a looping reference maybe? I’ve checked that file and it is not referencing itself, the file is not a block of itself for sure.

It is finally loaded at 9:47am, I double clicked it at 7:58am. Should I start with each linked block and take out small block references like at the scale of screws maybe?, all of the references? I think I’ll try just saving back to rh7 & see if it works as-is but in RH7.

Rh7 seemed to handle it better, I’ll see once I get them saved back.

Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated . . .

Cheers!

Yea ok, so I have it working for now. I did not have to go back to Rh7. Maybe I’m the only one to have to figure it out the hard way, but the 3dmodel file with all of the linked blocks opens & loads fine, even with the landscape file linked. The problem comes if I link that file to another and try to create 2d sheets & layouts with clipping sections from that linked model.

The solution I have gotten to work is that I make the clipping sections in the model file, then export them using the new export option on the clipping sections properties tab. Then link those clipping section exported files into the file where I make the 2d drawing sheets. Seems to be working.

So, as a matter or procedure it seems that Rhino does not particularly like to combine large/linked files/geometry with layout/2d work in the same file.

Let me know if I have missed anything that anyone knows about or if I’m still doing something wrong.

Thanks again for all the discussion.
Cheers!

Hello, I’m a tech support guy of an architecture studio, I haven’t any kind of experience in Rhino, I’m only a network and system administrator.

An our architect suffers often a total freeze with Rhino and Enscape. Making a render with Enscape, closing this causes a complete freeze not only of Rhino but of the entire computer, not possible to open task manager, no effect with Ctrl-Alt-Canc, not possible obtain a dump etc, the only way is reboot the computer losing also the Autosave.

Here the SysInfo, please help and ask for more details, thanks

Try troubleshooting the display pipeline, Citrix displays have been known to cause issues.

Not familiar with this one. You can isolate Rhino + Enscape from other 3rd party plugins by going into File>Properties>Plugins and sort by Plugins that do not ship w/ Rhino. Disable and Restart Rhino after changes.

Try removing this.
