Rhino 8 freezes entire PC

Hi guys,

I’m rather new to Rhino having only downloaded it today. I was watching a few tutorials on learning the basics, but the programme kept crashing when I tried to run simple tasks (such as creating a line or adding a box). When the programme crashes, my whole PC freezes up. Sometimes I have access to the mouse, sometimes that is frozen too. Ctrl + Alt + Del won’t work, and each time I need to hard reset my PC. I’ve tried deleting and re-installing the programme, as well as updating my drivers / windows / rhino.

My systeminfo is below:

I’ve had no problems in safe mode, so i’m just trying to narrow down what could be causing the issue, and would be grateful for any help.

Thanks!

Is there a crash dialog that comes up? If so, what email are the crashes being reported to?

I want to say try turning off GPU tessellation under Options > View > OpenGL. But that is a real shot in the dark.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your message! Unfortunately there’s no crash dialog as it isn’t a crash but instead just a freeze. On a couple of occasions I’ve tried to “wait out” the freeze, given it half an hour - 45 mins to crash to occur but I’ve not had any luck. So in each instance I’ve needed to reset my PC using the power button.

I’ll try turn off GPU tessellation and report back!

Unfortunately turning off GPU tessellation didn’t work - on a few different occasions the freeze still occurred after using the line tool for a few seconds!

I might try a previous version of Rhino and see if I have any luck that way. Can I get Rhino 7 on a trial like you can 8?

Just out of curiosity, that’s a rather quirky system. An AMD Radeon RX 6600M, literally a mobile GPU repurposed as a discrete desktop card, and 31 GB of RAM. Is this some form of Lenovo special or an All-In-One PC?

That’ll be because it is using an AMD processor with built in graphics which steals 1 GB of the 32GB installed for its graphics processing.

@Connor9,

Your systeminfo says you have two monitors attached. Does your system work better if you detach the secondary monitor from port 0? What resolution is each monitor?

Hi Guys, Im having the same issue. I have been using Rhino for the last 15 years, on lots of different PCs and I have never had it where Rhino freezes the whole machine. I’ve had lots of times, where it crashes the program, but in the last couple of months since updating to Rhino 8, it locks the whole computer down. Ive waited for an hour to see if it will reset and nothing.

I have a beast of a laptop. All up to date (2023, Razerblade 18, with 4090 RTX).

Here are my thoughts on the issue.

I can open up in Rhino 7 and it doesnt seem to happen?

It would seem primarily an issue when either using a clipping plane on a heavy model, and a reliance on Blocks.

I do a lot of big buildings where the facade model is lots of façade blocks. These can get quite heavy with a lot of detail. This coupled with Rhinos amazing ability to stretched and scaled blocks, might lead to a lot of background Processor gymnastics to make them update.

Couple this with a clipping plane that I use to navigate a model when its alot of levels, and this might be causing the issue?

Whats so annoying is how unpredicatble it is. I could cope if it froze rhino. but I dont understand how rhino can crash the entire windows system!

Please help!

Rhino 8 is 99% perfect, and i cant go back to Rhino 7.

Here is a link to the whole model if someone wants to test, moving the clipping planes around, or let me know if Im being a spaz, and there is an obvious modelling issue im doing?

Ben

Hi Ben,

Please run SystemInfo in the Rhino command line and post your result.

If you can replicate the freeze can you create and send us a windows memory dump?

There is a link to upload at the bottom, a link to this thread in the comments is appreciated. Thanks

Thanks.

I’m seeing zero lag with a inferior video card.

To troubleshoot lets disable the 3rd party plugin by going to File>Properties>Plugins

Updating video drivers can be scary but typically good to do…

Please ensure that Rhino is always using the Nvidia card.

Hi, Have done all that.

Rhino 8 still immediately crashed, when just spinning the model.

I went to the Error Log in windows and just clicked the ones that said ERROR:

Not sure what Im looking for.

Bitdefender… interesting. There was a recent issue with Bitdefender causing display issues in Rhino 7.

Is this the paid version of bitdefender? How long have you had it? have you tried adding Rhino as an exception?

Hi Uninstalled Bitdender completely.

its still happening.

I deleted all the blocks from Block manager and it still happened?

I don’t understand. It’s happened before on another Rhino file, and i ended up starting a new file and copying through the parts and the issue went away?

Here is a link to it crashing

Thanks so much for helping.

Interestingly,

I just tried a new rhino file and used worksession, to reference the whole model and copied into multiple times and it was fine and super fast with no lag. So its not the complexity of the 3d model.

I then added a clipping plane and it immediately crashed the file.

I think its that?

Is this a rhino 8 issue?

Thanks

Ben

there is a related issue, which we haven’t made much headway with either, similar but slightly different environment on the video cards…

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU (NVidia) Memory: 8GB, Driver date: 2-15-2024 (M-D-Y). OpenGL Ver: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 551.61

I’m running this card with no issues…

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Laptop GPU (NVidia) Memory: 8GB, Driver date: 3-12-2024 (M-D-Y). OpenGL Ver: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 551.86

Ben,

As I look at the video it seems to suggest that moving around the view and them manipulating the clipping plane is increasing the used memory as shown in the video?

The last steps covered were that the model was fine until a clipping plane was inserted? Did that create a Crash Dump dialog that includes and email entry?

First, please Disable the plugin "D5 Sync for Rhino” in Tools pulldown > Options > Plugins > And then in the Drop down to the right, Plugins that do not ship with Rhino. Uncheck enable on D5.

Run the test. It looks like it is not a crash, more of a freeze up?

We have other things to try, but want to make a changes one at a time in order to determine what the problem is.

I messes around with the model a lot and cannot make it freeze or even slow down. So, there are still differences in what we are doing.

Ben -

We have been tracking this problems a bit. We believe an improvement perhaps could be made by:

Go to Tools > Options > View > OpenGL. And uncheck the GPU tessellation. Then restart Rhino and lets see if clipping planes act better.

MY MAN!

Bingo it worked!

Thanks so much!

I love rhino was starting to freak out that i had been modelling things badly.

I also think we are leaning more into Revit and are exporting OBJ files from revit that have a tonne of geometry in it, that if modelled in rhino wouldn’t have all the tessellated triangles.

We are using ‘conveyor’ to get stuff out of revit and into rhino, so maybe this would have helped.

Thanks again!

Ben
