Closing Rhino 8

Hello.

I am having a typical problem.
After successfully saving a Rhinofile in Rhino8 I want to close the program by clicking the X or via File > close, but nothing happens.
Or actually, when clicking one of these options Rhino freezes and I am not able to do anything anymore, even the 3D model is still visible but froze.

Any solution on this? I am having the problem for a while now.

Thanks in advance.
Anton

Hi Anton -

Please run the Rhino SystemInfo command and copy-paste the result here.

Also, when Rhino freezes, is the rest of the system still responsive?
-wim

I am also facing the issue. Rhino 8 is closing frequently.

This is a potential problem with a Video card that does not have enough memory. The requirement for Rhino is 4GB, but this card has 1GB. Having more then one monitor running also will make this much more difficult.

Does the desktop computer only have a the build in Intel video or is there a larger AMD or NVidia card in it?

Sajesh - Essentially this is the same problem as Diana has:

Thank you for this, in general there are no issues using the build in videocard.
So I was not thinking of this reason, I indeed only have the built in videocard ánd using 2 screens.

When the issue occurs more often I will need to change the videocard!

Thanks, Anton

@scottd I sometimes have the same or very similar problem, and I am very skeptical that my problem is due to insufficient video card memory as my video card has 11GB. Also I only use a single screen. (System info below)

My recollection is my problem started several months ago, perhaps after either a Windows 11 update and/or a Rhino update.

I frequently have difficulty closing Rhino when several Rhino sessions are open, and when at least one has been open for “a while”. I click on the “X” to close the Rhino window, nothing appears to happen, in particular the “Save changes to …” pop-up does not appear, and Rhino is frozen. Everything else works normally.

Some combination of switching to another application, minimizing the other Rhino windows and the Esc key eventually makes the “Save changes to …” pop-up visible. Then I am able to respond and close the Rhino window.

This problem is not related to the complexity of the model nor the file size. It occured today when three Rhino sessions were open, each with very simple models.

When you crash do you get a crash dialog with email?

No crash. Windows and the PC toher than Rhino continues to function normally. Rhino just freezes with no messages. After I manage to get the pop-up visible and respond to it, Rhino works normally.

The problems appears to be visibility of the “Save changes to …” pop-up. It is not on top. Could be caused by an NVDIA driver update, Windows 11 update and/or Rhino 8 update.

Interesting, so the saves dialog does not stay on top?

It never appears initially.

I have met the same issue but my card have 24gb ram(4090)

All,
When Rhino appears frozen when you have saved and are closing the application, please create a memory dump file and send that over. The instructions for doing so can be found here: Manually Creating a Memory Dump (DMP File) from an Unresponsive Rhino for Windows [McNeel Wiki]
Thanks,

Does it freeze when the SaveAS command is run?
Are there multiple Rhino Applications open?

So first at all it happens from time to time. It’s difficult to reproduce. It can happen even in empty rhino file. Scott, it’s freeze when I want to close document by clicking ,x” button at the upper right corner of screen. Same like in every other app in windows. Yesterday it crushed at the evening so I have dmp file but it’s too big to send. 3,5gb. Its eternity to upload file like this with my internet

This could be the saveas behind if there is any change to the model. Changing the perspective view for instance would do it.

Also, there is D5 running. Are you actively using it? Diabling it and seeing if that makes a difference may also help. Plugins are asked if they need to finish any business before closing so that can also cause something like this.

@scottd Any ideas about the cause of the problem on my system I reported above. It obviously is not a third party plugin (no third party plugins active), or insufficient video memory (11GB), RAM (64GB).

Next time it happens I will attempt to save a .dmp file.
