Rhino 7 Not Responding

I’m working on a grid and it keeps not responding and VERY slow. I was asked to install new updates and it happened after i did that it also asked me to first uninstall but I didn’t see how unless I’d loose everything. Should uninstall now and then reinstall? Would that erase anything and will it bring it back to normalcy?

Please run the Rhino “SystemInfo” command and post the results.
Hopefully something obvious will show up as a likely cause.

ok thank you. I will try that.

It looks to me like this is a Desktop computer and you have connected your monitor to the wrong display port.

Your Nvidia GeForce is not being used, and that would explain the symptom you described.

Plug your monitor(s) directly into the GeForce GPU in the computer’s expansion slot. Don’t use the Intel GPU port on the computer case.

You may need a different display cable, but it should have come with the Nvidia GPU when you purchased it.

If this is a laptop, then it is configured incorrectly.

Any luck?

This is a laptop

Okay.
That would indicate your Windows is set to a “battery saver” or “balanced” power usage so the GeForce is not being used.

In Windows Control Panel > Power Options, change to a “High performance” option that isn’t concerned about energy consumption.

Here’s how you can tell:
Currently your SystemInfo reports,
"Secondary graphics devices.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 with Max-Q Design (NVidia) Memory: 4GB, Driver date: 10-22-2020 (M-D-Y).

Integrated accelerated graphics device (shares primary device ports)

  • This device is not being used

When this is correctly configured, your GeForce will be listed in SystemInfo as the Primary OpenGL device.

It doesn’t give me a high performance option. I just clicked on change to restore default settings. (original) hoping that works. I’ll try to log in. I see you emailed me how to get in. I was having license issues too. Thank you so much for your time and efforts. I’ll hopefully get back onto Rhino and check the systemsinfo command to see if Nvidia GeForce comes up

still coming up as secondary. What should I do?

@John_Brock I was able to find High Performance and did that but still not connected to Nvidia Geforce

See if these instructions get you sorted:

John,
I also am having very slow response from Rv-7.
Can you look over the below and advise if there is something wrong with the system ETC.
most of the issue seems to be when adding clipping planes and trying to view them the file I am working on is only 4MB and it is frustratingly slow and has caused the program to crash multiple times.

Hello- the first thing to do is get the latest driver for your gpu from the nVidia website. Then, see if driving one monitor only helps at all.

  • Pascal

Pascal,
I tried searching for the latest driver it keeps coming back saying it has the latest one installed.

Have had 2 monitors running since this computer was built without issues until now.

Hi Wayne - are you asking Windows or the NVidia website about the latest driver? Windows will lie. I do not say you should not be able to run two monitors, I just would like to know if not running two monitors makes any difference…

-Pascal

Thank You Pascal,

I was just doing the standard driver update without going on the website and they had changed the name so it wouldn’t update automatically.

I have just completed the download and will try the system again on that model.

Wayne Buchholz.

Pascal,
Thank you I have done the website check and yes Windows did lie indeed name change from NVidia didn’t help.
Alas this was all in vain as it changed nothing below is the current system info.
Rhino still has a blue circle of death when trying any commands and usually pressing ESC key gets out of it however that gets very tedious when I am trying to work on details.

Any further suggestions would be appreciated, of note I will be sending the machine in to get a service from the Tech team next week.

Hi Wayne - is the hangup in particular files or any? Does it happen in detail views or model views, or both? Can you make it happen in a simple file, with just a few objects?

-Pascal

Pascal,
I tried a simple file of 512Kb and no issue there I went the file of 4Mb that I have been working on and the issue presented itself again, I have a model that was supplied by an architect of 235Mb and the issue didn’t present itself there.
Could the file I have be corrupt somehow?
I refence blocks so as to keep the file size down,

Cheers,
Wayne.

Hi Wayne - can you send us the 4MB one? Please make sure to save with all textures and send any external block reference files so we can reproduce the thing here - please send to tech@mcneel.com, with a link back here in your comments.
