I just intalled the new Rhino 6 version. It all went well until Rhino Freezzd and then the rest of the computer. I was not able to move my pointer and even do CTRL LAT SUP. I had to switch off and restart the computer. I tried again and after a few minutes, the same thing happened.
Thanks for the report!
- Is this happening with all files or only one?
- Can you run the command SystemInfo and copy all>paste the text here in reply?
Same issue for me, started happening after last major win10 update
I use Rhino 5.14 though
The file doesn’t matter for me.
Tried with all plugins disabled and even clean reinstall of Rhino 5.
I did try only with one file as I uploaded and tried the program only today. Here is below the result of the SystemInfo command

Sorry I think you meant SystemInfo under Rhino 6. Here it is

Hi
I think you’re just running out of memory.
The Rhino System requirements list 8GB RAM as a minimum.
You only have 4GB and just loading Windows 10 with nothing else will use 2GB.
Can you add more RAM to your computer?
Unfortunately, I don’t have a system with only 4GB to even test with.
Thanks for the report, this thread is about the Rhino 6 beta but I can still try to help with your v5 SR14 issue. If the freezing problem started happening only after the Win 10 update, I’d check your graphics card driver to see if there’s an update for it first. Use https://wiki.mcneel.com/rhino/5/video/troubleshooting if you need help with that part.
Next, try customizing your Windows display settings according to this page. If you still have problems with Rhino 5 freezing, please make a new post in the Rhino for Windows topic on the forum or email tech@mcneel.com with any more specific details about when the problem occurs and the system specs of your computer including GPU make, model and driver, CPU, RAM amount and the number of monitors used as well as their resolution settings in Windows.
Seems I’ve found my culprit.
Since the last major WIN10 update, Rhino 5 is not able to notice driver version or date.
At least that is what it looks like… ?
(Although it does mention correct driver in OpenGL)
I’ve already tried older and the newest drivers… no luck ;S
Total video memory is way off though…
any suggestions?
It is possible but I have been running Rhino 5 on this computer for a few years now with only 4 Go of RAM without any problem.
Cordialement / Sincerely
Vincent MEENS
The only thing I can suggest in v5 is to do a complete uninstall and reinstall of the GPU driver which you have the most recent version of for Win 10 from Nvidia. That may help your freezing issue but I would also want to know exactly where and when the freezing happens. Does it happen when you start Rhino? Or when you draw a box in Wireframe or when you go into Shaded or Rendered modes? All of this may help pin point the problem area.
This thread is about the v6 beta though so just to stay on topic can you try v6 on the same machine and let me know if you still have any issues? We’ve done a lot of display work in v6 and I’d like to know if it helps in your case.
Hey Brian!
The freezing is seemingly random… at least the way I experience it.
It has happened when moving the cursor, changing angle of viewport etc.
Regarding mode. I’ve experienced it both in shaded, rendered and wireframe.
So.
Regarding v6!
Tried a complete(clean) uninstall/reinstall of GPU.
Done a run with it. Just had a crash again, roughly 10 min ago. New model… so its not a specific file issue.
However, i can see that the GPU driver and date is weird in v6, as well.
The dedicated video memory (total video memory) is also weird here… should be 2048 MB
Only thing i can say for sure, is that the issue/bug/problem arose after last major win10 update.
Been playing with it for the last two days with no problem. In windows
Danny
Thanks for trying v6 too. If you can provide any specific steps that cause a freeze or crash of the Rhino 6 beta please let us know. You mentioned the freezing issues you see in v5 are random which makes it tough to diagnose. Let’s focus on the workflow in v6 where you see a problem for now. I chatted with the developers last week and it’ll help identify the problem with more specific steps to see the issue and a description of exactly what occurs. I understand it can be hard to do this but any extra details you can add will help. My hunch is that it may be system specific issue with the GPU driver after the Windows update but I’m unsure what more to suggest at this time. @stevebaer @jeff any ideas from a developer stand point? Thx
Thanks for the reply Brian.
If testing V6 helped in anyway, i would be a so much happier
As you mention yourself, it isn’t so easy to diagnose the issue…
I’m currently also updating on the issue in the “Rhino FREEZE complete because some issue?”-thread
Regarding workflow… there isn’t really anything that pops out. It freezes at different points every time.
Graphic modes can be different, i can be doing different commands etc.
I’m also suspecting something GPU related…
Basically because of what the viewports look like when selecting a specific port. (screenshot 1 & 2)
1:
2:
Alhough the graphical abnormality “corrects” itself when selecting the same viewport one extra time or I start moving geometry or move the camera. (screenshot 3)
3:
The only thing I’m happy about at the moment, is that it seems that there are more people than just me who are experiencing the freeze issue. At least according to what i can read in the other thread…
Just hope that means there will be made a fix for this, faster than if only i had the problem.
One other thing I’ve found that can affect the update of a GPU driver is Restarting Windows versus shutting down and starting up again. At least on some systems I’ve had the act of Restarting to complete the driver update has fixed display issues. Can you try that too if you haven’t already?
Sorry to say, already tried that when downgrading my GPU driver.
(had hopes that it might be the new drivers that were a problem… they weren’t… at least they didn’t change the issue)
I had an upadte of Rhino 6 a couple of days ago and changes my RAM from 4 Gb to 8 Gb. I was just working on a file when it suddenly freezed again. Here is my systeminfo
