Raytraced mode delivers quite dark images

hello,
i have a very general question: i really love the new rytraced mode but when i try to do indoor images and have rather small openings with light coming in, the image is just black. is it just because the raytracing is not like in a real renderer or can i adjust the "light sensivity"somewhere?
thank you
max

It’s brute-force realistic. What’s your lighting setup? What’s your gamma settings?

Hello -
=)

Does the full render (Render command) look correct?

-Pascal

only skylight and normal sun so far…
where do i adjust the gamma settings?

yes, the render command delivers a much brighter image!

WIL_3D

the raytraced image has a very good lighting atmosphere, it is only too drak.
the rendered one is not dark but very “flat”.
how can i improve them?

Well it looks fairly realistic, you just need(as in reality) more light or to adjust the exposure. I don’t know if the document render settings on the Mac expose enough options for the raytraced mode, but you should be able to multiply the brightness of the sun and skylight.

You could try bumping the diffuse bounce count, letting light bounce around more, thus contributing more to the end result. Here are some renders for comparison. The scene is a simple box with small opening, and only sun in use. No skylight. With increased diffuse bounce you see more parts of the inner-box receive light. But also note that higher counts increase the time needed to converge.

Now the same, but with skylight enabled. Note that due to the small opening not much light from the sky gets in… Note that I have used here just the solid white as skylight as well (so no HDR). If you do go with an HDR environment you may find that the brightest spots won’t necessarily contribute much, especially if they aren’t visible from the opening in the box much.

Finally the same box with a rectangular light near the ceiling. Intensity set to 10. Diffuse bounces set to 3:

(and yes, these were all capture on the mac).

hi nathan, thank you very much for your diligent help! thats exactly what i was worrying about. just one more question: where do i adjust the diffuse bounce?

aaah! didn’t know this one. thank you!!
