The interface and ease of use in V7 has been ‘upgraded’ into a regular shit storm of thoughtless and clunky design mistakes. It’s laughable hearing the word upgrade or any other positive about V8 when the most minor aspects of an application become a GD mystery or gone. The RMB for instance. Now there’s nothing at all. Repeating the last command can be done with the F’ing space bare but we have to lose the popup for the sake of one handy command. It’s hard to imagine the dandies upgrading the application actually make daily practical use of it.
This is perhaps the only time I’ve ever experienced an upgraded product that makes the former version more desirable. Yeah? Make it better doesn’t apply in V8 if the term includes usability and transitional ease.
Very frustrated at this point with the upgrade deadline at the end of the month making the cost increase by 30%. This feels like a real FU for Mac users.
The least could be done is push the discount deadline another 6 - 8 months.
I disagree. Making the UI more flexible was a step in the right direction. There are many great changes, like the improved layers panel.
Right mouse button?
You can also repeat the last command with Enter.
I use Rhino daily, well maybe more like 5 days a week (on a Mac).
No. Rhino 8 is at least 10 times faster on macOS, which already makes it a worthwhile upgrade in my opinion. Also rendering is now actually a thing on macOS, which in previous version was more like a non-working “work-in-progress” (at least on Apple Silicon).
Don’t you think 3 months of discount is enough? It’s not like they pulled a fast one on us.
LOL, I disagree again. Mac users in particular were spoiled a little with this upgrade. Thanks McNeel, for the Metal support and everything else!
There’s no such thing as a complete project. Rhino is continuously improved upon.
So, instead of cursing around, flaming, and trying to discourage the devs, how about doing some constructive criticism? Maybe somebody relevant will take a look and change it in your favour?
Dismissing a user’s experiences like that is the worst thing to do. People are generally not in the business of taking time to fabricate fictional gripes to bash a product. If you are personally happy with v8 great.
Yeah, we’re frustrated about it, too. We’re working to fix this stuff as fast as we can.
This isn’t going to happen. If it’s not worth upgrading now, please don’t. If it’s not worth upgrading ever, please don’t. If you trust us to get this right eventually, and you want the discount, upgrade now and get a discount. These are the only options you have, and you have full agency about which one you want to use. We won’t hold your choice against you, ever. If you skip Rhino 8, you’ll be able to upgrade to Rhino 9 for the same price - no penalties.
The display modes will be available in the 8.5 release candidate that we should start shipping next Tuesday. If you want a release of 8.5 before Tuesday, let me know and I can send you a link.
Have to agree with @JKayten about some of these gripes. It does seem the product was released before being ready for primetime. Every day I’m fighting bugs. No, I’m not reporting all of these because these take time. With v8 we’ve lost the ability to create unadorned keyboard shortcuts. Yes, there are aliases, however those are not as flexible. The only compelling reason in my case to upgrade is better graphics capability with Metal.
No, only display modes so far. It would be good to figure out what options are truly handy and used so we don’t add items back that only make the menu larger.
We released a little over 3 months ago and we don’t charge $1000 for an upgrade, but that’s irrelevant. Sorry that this took us a while to get put back. When you make changes, sometimes we find that they aren’t what people want. It is the risk of making change.
This is why software vendors offer discounts to early adopters: they get to bet the guinea pigs. You could wait to upgrade until all the kinks are worked out but you pay more.
There have been problems in every release but, for the most part, they tend to get worked out.
One thing to keep in mind is that, in this release, there was an underlying hardware architectural shift.
I’m not going to hold back on my complaints but I am filled with hope.
