Hi there. I have a strange error with Rhino for Mac that appears time after times.
Rhino destoys DFX file than I try to open it. For some reason the file gets the same weight every time (31kb) after that crash. I cant work with it, i cant edit it, i cant seve it. If I open the file with solidworks edrawing first It looks fine. Plot-Zund-Universal-Colors-Rhino-Mac-Crash.dxf (30.2 KB)
That does not look like a typical DXF file to me - a normal DXF you can open in a text editor and read it - it’s plain text.

It was a typical file created with rhino for mac. I’ve got this file after open attemp at the same machine.
For example:
- I save dxf file from rhino (the weight is 258kb)
- Check it using Solidworks eDrawings. It looks fine and has the same weight
- I reopen it with Rhino. Rhino gives me that error and for some reason destroys that dxf (gives me the file from me first post)
I have seen this, it was a file I prepared for laser cutting, didn’t have the issue repeat so assumed it was due to something else.
Hi Maxim - can you please post, or send me, the 3dm file that you are working with? Or does it happen with any file you export to dxf?
thanks,
-Pascal
it happens only if i reopen dxf file. Works fine than i export it from 3dm.
Got it, thanks.
@Maxim - can you open this file? Here I can with no problems. Untitled.dxf (171.1 KB)
-Pascal
Nope. I’ve got the same problem.
Here is that I’ve got.
Untitled.dxf (30.2 KB)
Wow… @dan - do you have any ideas? Looks like at least one other user has seen the same thing - just opening a dxf in Rhino ruins the dxf… (not repeatable so far here).
-Pascal
Just curious, what happens if you write protect or lock (can’t remember the Mac specific terminology) the DXF before you open it?
That’s just what i was thinking! Will have a try latter. But in this case I will not be able to rewrite the file with the same name I guess.
So. Is there a way to fix it? It works fine with autocad and rhino for windows.
Weird @pascal, I have no idea on this one.
Here is what I did to test:
- Downloaded the Untitled.dxf (171.1 KB) that you posted above.
- Launched Rhinoceros 5.2.1 (5C254)
- Clicked “Open Other” on the splash screen and navigated to the file downloaded above.
- In the Open AutoCAD file dialog, accepted the defaults and clicked Open.
The file opens as expected.
I do not see an original 3dm file posted above (sorry if I missed it), but all I can see is dxfs.
@Maxim I’m not sure what to do to reproduce the issue
-Dan
Hi @Maxim
I still can’t seem to reproduce this one. Can you please post your System Information (found in Rhinoceros > About Rhinoceros > More Info… button > Copy to clipboard button and pasted in a reply here)?
Thanks in advance,
-Dan
if i launch rhino and open (or import or insert) pascal’s Untitled.dxf , it opens fine…
if i try to open maxim’s file in the original post, i get the same error he’s showing…
after which, i can no longer open pascal’s .dxf unless i quit & relaunch rhino.
Here it comes again

post the .3dm in the state prior to exporting to dxf
Rhino shouldn’t crash, but…
Have you tried exporting as a .stp / .step, unless there are triangles in your model that you need. .stp seems to be the defacto standard for 3D geometry exchange.
After a couple more attempts, I’m still unable to reproduce this crash by opening Colors-Rhino-Mac.dxf in Rhino for Mac 5.2.3 (running under macOS Sierra 10.12). The file opens just fine for me.
Perhaps OS X 10.9.5 is the culprit? I don’t have a testing machine handy at the moment.
Is anyone still seeing this crash?
i’m seeing it with the file Colors-Rhino-Mac-crashed.dxf
(the one linked right above the one i think you tried).
