It doesn’t seem very consistent at the moment. For example the Align and Distribute buttons are all still black and red like always but their parent is black and green. This confuses me.
I remember discussions about whole UI being monochrome (not my type), but this seems like painted with crayons. Guys, please remember about older users, we tend to defence status quo.
i am a commandline-obsessed.
But many of my students / customers secretly click the icons…
I would love 2 aspects to be considered:
A color choice that provides sufficient contrast for people with color blindness or other impairments.
an additional layer of information in the color, maybe background
colors for diffrent object-types (mesh,subd,nurbs)
a color for commands that work for all / many object types
graphic should be consistent wether objects are
transformed / deformed
cut / split / shrinked
…
And in general - i think it is not new icons, that will improve the overview on all, more then 1000 commands.
I already made 2 suggestions i would love to see:
preselection should limit commandline suggestions. For example if I select a curve and start typing, Booleanunion and mergeVertices will not be part of the suggestion.
meta-commands
for example it would be nice to have a metaSurfaceFromCurves command, that allows to select curves, assign an axis … and should offer to switch to a result from loft, sweep2 or railrevolve …
for example “glue” should combine weld, join, merge, stitch, …
i like them actually, and i am very sensitive regarding such stuff, but i am using them in dark mode, not sure how they appear with a bright background. though i still would prefer the v7 mac icons for menus, its just cleaner without these shouting colors
probably when he starts asking himself such questions
Some say you are old when you can’t put your leg in sink anymore, or you prefer status quo over changes.
Don’t get me wrong, changes are welcome, especially inside toolbars, colors are secondary (I think the light pink or blue are too light).
That seam is barely visible (even on retina display).
The isolines are also fading due too the lack of contrast
Patch does it better.
I am thinking about people I work with. I am passionate about Rhino, but for them it is a result of corporate choice and they don’t like changes (unless they help them to do the job faster).
Yes! I was thinking of smtg like this since years!
Actually many commands could become more aggregated to reduce the first level number of icon making the function working in the background.
To me Rhino needs a better hierarchy in the commands.
That now already exists. You’ll see blue for surfaces and solid tools, mesh tools purple, subd tools turquoise. More consistency and color language will be added as icons get updated.
I just checked the new icons and feel that the approach didn’t go far enough. Simply shifting the colors to a pastel style isn’t sufficient. If that’s all, we might as well leave them as they are now. I’d suggest a more flat design, like the one at [https://rhinoui.com]. Some expressions are may be to fare away form the original here, but the approach has a very strong, well-defined concept.
It’s possible to batch-process icons SVGs or edit SVG codes in the Rhino XML config file. I was playing with it, it is quite a bit of work and preparation, but doable. In theory, one could categorize not only the UI colors but also the colors used in the icons and tweak them to one’s liking. So, that could end the debate about at least the icon colors.
It would be nice if the panel icons could also be edited.
Where many Rhino plugins are free, I think there could be more paid Rhino GUI themes created by the community. Paid, because making good icons for such a big CAD program as Rhino is an extensive and challenging task, and this job is entirely to satisfy someone’s taste and enrage someone else at the same time…
…but while paid, one set of icons can be (sometimes even should be) heavily influenced by the other, so it’s tricky to not steal someone’s work either intentionally or unintentionally
I think the best McNeel can do is to make it easy to customize everything.
I just tried the evaluation version of RhinoArtisan (jewelry modeling plugin), and they seem to have done a total redrawing of the icons, based on v8 icons.
It’s just an example of what can be done while keeping an already recognized icon.
And I think what was done on v8 about the light/dark mode works great, most icons are the same, just with a light outline around them for dark mode.
Honestly, it’s better than WIP9, as it has a clear artistic touch. So, you need support from RhinoArtisan or a new designer to achieve the desired balance.
