Wish: Rhino 9 icons with more contrast

Hi dev-team,

my eyes get worse , so I prefer icons with a high contrast.

I’ve put the Rhino 8 and 9 icons side by side, and I think the Rhino 9 icons lose contrast.

I am talking about light colors appearance, and button sizes bigger than 40.

Points: Rhino 8 control points as squares, and with white background are much more contrasty

Colors: Changing colors for different usages is a good thing. Nethertheless pastell colors lose contrast.

I would use saturated colors and the old blue, and make pastell colors optional.

Clearness: A lot of the new icons are much more readable, because of black rail curves and adding sharp surface edges. :+1:

Thanks

Michael

I downloaded the WIP couple days ago again and I’m still :face_vomiting:

Some improvements but just not a huge fan of those light colors especially that light lime green

i even lost “muscle memory” because i dont recognise the icons anymore, if this is what they are going with i would have to re learn a new default Rhino state

There is just more to it than the software for those that work many hours in rhinoceros know what I’m on about it’s just not pleasant to look at for long and for those that go above and beyond need to have less stress and strain not just for the eyes but for the mind as well.

I agree. That “smurf” blue, that lime green and the fuchsia of the meshes are really unwatchable :face_vomiting: At least they should have left the traditional blue of the Rhino icons intact.
The juxtaposition of these colors creates a jarring, cartoonish look; it doesn’t look like Rhinoceros anymore…
In my opinion, if they removed that smurf light blue and left the cobalt blue everything would look better: try it and believe it!

I hope that before the final version of Rhino 9 comes out, the entire color palette is revised.

This has been discussed some time ago in a lengthy topic and the general consensus was that the new pastel colours are difficult to read. Especially by colour-blind Rhino users like me…

As someone with really bad eyes, i just can support @Michael_Meyer opinion. (Besides that the new icons are in general really pretty!)

The light green, white and light grey background blends everything together so the eye has difficulty processing what it is seeing

It strains my eyes they become tired and the more tired the less time in Rhino

It is the same like my mouse setup i have to have it in a certain way or I risk getting strains on my wrist, fingers and arm. The choice of mouse, chair, angles, supports, positions etc.. are very important i have perfected it so much now I get no fatigue even after many hours of rhinoceros

the eyes and brain need their “setups” as well, this is why I said there is more to it than just the software it is just a tool, we don’t design a wrench or a screwdriver with spikes or sharp corners on the handles if that makes sense.

I would much prefer the ability to tweak this myself as I am not personally a fan of the new colors. This experiment has proven in my mind any change to the UI must include an option for customization as there is no one fits all solution.

I believe that is what I am hearing from others here as well?

+1 this from me

Definitely re. the customization notion -

Would add that with customization capabilities, it would be nice if an option to use bitmaped icons can be restored. The introduction of vector based re-scalability is great in theory but it never seems to work out quite right (or at least as well icons designed at the pixel level). I think that we will see a trend of high dpi displays tending to converge on some standard pixel pitches. (Should make bit-perfect images easier to manage)

Here’s a comparison on a 4k display of Rhino 7(left) vs. 8 (right) …

To the OP’s point - the fact that these “classic” color schemes use nicely selected regular and complimentary sets of hues, with enough variation to break up the visual monotony (orientation anchors). (haven’t seen v9 yet - outside of screencaps here)

Icon renderings in v8 just seems less refined - the lines are both thicker and blurrier at the same time, in use the v8 method seems somehow “heavier” on the eye, and slower to parse.

(should add that I’m only speculating that the cause of the difference seen above is due to the vector icon engine that was added - seems likely but not certain that it case)

Hi @Zaxxon,

the Rhino 7 icons are crisp, but much too small.

In my opinion, the Rhino 8 icons with a bigger size like here 48 are much clearer, and recognizable.

My 2 cents

@Michael_Meyer - have you tried playing with the size options in the config panel?

Only “Small” / “Medium” / “Large” there but maybe it helps.

I had the same issue, on a big display the icons were starting to get lost - (probably compounded by gradually encroaching presbyopia)

@Zaxxon Yes, Large is still much too small for me.

Indeed. As stated in the existing Rhino 9 icons topic, Grasshopper 2 already does this (i.e. provide dynamic/customisable icons schemes):

So added something similar in Rhino seems like a slam dunk:

Edit: Updated screenshots demonstrating the new options:

It’s a crime to vastly change the UI without leaving an opinion to use the classic colours and icon design from Rhino 7/8.

Rhino 9 UI cheme options:
A. Classic V7 (thin outlines, white accents);
B. Classic V8 (thick outlines, gray accents);
C. Modern V9 (washed-out pastel colours, experimenting with lime green, add eye strain to colour-blind people just for fun).

I agree with this personally.

Why are you using those soft colors? after 8 hours my eyes will not see anything.

I had not seen nothing about the new interface and something is weird looks better but that color palette… I think will be insane share scripts evaluate it or look for help.

At the end a lot of people will end using the Rhino 8 style.

and what about a full theme black for grasshopper even in the menus, tabs and not only in the canvas.

I agree! In general, everything including tools and sneakers seem to be given a color scheme for kindergartners. Bring back the adults!

There is an ancient saying:
If a CAD program needs icons with fancy colour scheme, they are not readable enough.

Another ancient saying:
Icons with washed-out pastel colours vastly increase the eye strain during long modeling sessions.

I like the new color coding.
The colors help to distinguish between the categories.
That’s a good functionality.

The used colors itself wouldn’t have been my choice.
I don’t care too much if I like the lila or green.

About the functionality, I can’t speak for color blind users.
I understand that colors can be hard or impossible to see.
But what if the icons were all black and white?
Then it’s the same effect, or?

In any case, and to please everyone, easy customisation is needed.
The Grasshopper approach is fine.

As an experiment, I’d introduce a hue/saturation/contrast setting.
The icons don’t need to be touched this way.

FWIW, Grasshopper 2 has desaturation filters that stack with the theme:

Sounds like all the pieces are there, “just” need to get it implemented on the Rhino side too
