Missing fonts in PDF import

I’m trying to import a PDF of a spreadsheet exported from Google Sheets and Rhino first complains of missing fonts, which is just nonsense, the fonts are Arial and Arial Black which are on my computer, and then proceeds to mangle the import, bolding text which is not bold.

Anyone else encountered this? Have a workaround?

(I’d include the file, but it contains client info and I’d rather not. If anyone wants a copy I can send it privately.)

I’d like whitch specific version of Rhino 8 you have? could you share this pdf here? Thank you.

Mac version Version 8 (8.26.25349.19002, 2025-12-15), MacOS 15.7.1.

Hi rfritz -

That is not the case.
When I look at the document properties of that PDF file, I get the following:

-wim

I have now tried it on Windows and got slightly different but still incorrect results; they seem to depend on what fonts are available on the system.

All text in Rhino depends on what fonts are available on the system.

But all four fonts are available on my system. Two of those are Arial under variant names, the third is Arial Black and the last is FreeSans, which I have long since downloaded. Whatever font name matching method is being used seems to be failing. I get slightly different results on Windows and I assume that’s because the fonts are different, but I get correct results in no case.

I have, however, found a hack which improves matters. If I place a “⌀” before “L01” in the table, causing a font change to FreeSans, it apparently resets Rhino’s font recognizer and the resulting import is much cleaner. Since my imported table is short, I can easily clean up the result, which is sufficient for this project.

Thanks for the attention. This is clearly not a matter that is going to resolved with a simple workaround. I’ve got enough of a hack that I can proceed; that will have to do for now. If I had a longer table I might try TomKod’s table import plugin (though I am not sure that works with images, which I want), write my own conversion script, or even retreat to just entering the table, the way we used to in AutoCAD.

BTW, it appears that my usual PDF viewers and Rhino process font metrics differently.

Client just sent me a PDF… says letters are missing from fonts on import, wasn’t like that before and V7 imports it perfectly…

PDF:

Rhino V8 import:

Rhino V7 import:

In V7 I get a warning message

Is this the same problem? Client says he thinks it’s only since the last V8 SR.

Hello? This still appears to be a problem in the latest SRC…

Do you need a file to test?
