Material Editor thumbnail preview regeneration S L O W

I cannot repeat in a file with a simple box, but in the larger project files whenever I edit the layer material, it takes good 10-20 seconds to update the fancy new thumbnail of the material preview. Materials I change are simple and trying to only change the color, nothing special. It should work as fast as previous OpenGL material preview or have an option to witch to less cool but shows fast preview thumbnail. Now it is a major slowdown.

thanks,

Jarek

Hi Jarek - is Cycles active, by any chance, when this happens?

-Pascal

Hi Pascal,

No, not using cycles, plain Rendered mode.
(and not running cycles before in the session)

Hi Jarek - is this a reasonable test ? I opened my ‘complex’ file, that has a good couple of dozen materials. I add a new Custom material and change the color to blue - is that where you’d see the lag in the thumbnail? Here this is pretty much instant, as I change the color in the color picker, it updates in the Materials panel.

Hi Pascal,

These are the files with 100s or 1000s of materials.
First click on the Layer material waits for a few seconds, and then once I pick a diffuse color picker, every adjustment freezes for 5-10 seconds, then thumbnail refresh takes another 5 seconds…
I can only guess that populating the drop-down menu with all the materials takes long in such file but it would make sense if that happens once I click the dropdown materials selection menu, and not just enter the Material Editor or try to change colors on a single material thumbnail. The file is large but I can try to upload a sample if you can’t repeat it on your end.

thanks,

@pascal see Grasshopper Custom Render Objects for a great example of slowness.

I made a lot of performance improvements to the material system a couple of weeks ago and this dialog was improved considerably. I have just now added another speed improvement. The dialog should appear much faster than it did before. This fix should be in the next WIP.

RH-40734 should be fixed in the latest WIP. Please give it a try.
