Material Tab and thumbnail preview being extremely slow

The material tab is extremely slow. When I hover mouse over an material it takes almost a second or 2 for the material to highlight. Disabling material thumbnail preview helps a little bit but still very very slow. Didn’t have this issue in Rhino 7… Does anyone else have this issue?

Could you run the systemInfo command in command line of Rhino and post the result?

Hi @jessesn ,

Thanks for your information, could you try to update to Rhino 8.13 ?
https://www.rhino3d.com/download/rhino-for-windows/8/latest/

I noticed that your device has two graphic cards, could you try to make Rhino running on Nvidia display card ?

Hi Jessesn,

  1. The problem with slow material tab & thumbnails has been persistive since the first service release. I don’t think updating will resolve it because this issue is never specifically addressed.

  2. I am positive Rhino is running on Nvidia GPU. The Rhino handles complex model very well if without material tab turned on.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Could you pls help record a video about this issue? it seems that I haven’t found a similar problem on my side. Thanks.

Hi Iyang -

I think this issue is being discussed here:

-wim

@Iyang_Huang Can you take a screenshot of the material editor?

hi Wim, Thanks for the reply. I have tried the settings suggested in this thread.
The problem persists with the EnableGL = False EnablePreview = False.

I also think, this only poses a temporary makeover - we still need the preview back down the road. It was available in the previous builds of Rhino.

Hi Max, thanks for the reply. Please see here:

Both your Intel and Nvidia drivers are out of date by enough to affect current Rhino versions. You might want to update those as well. If you update to the current release of Rhino then McNeel can be absolutely sure they are diagnosing and attempting to fix a problem that still exists.

@Iyang_Huang Thanks for the video. Can you share the model?

absolutely. what’s the best way to share the file with you?

Large and/ or confidential models can be uploaded here.

But if it is small enough (I do not remember the limit) and not confidential, then one can attach it to this thread.

thanks! it’s uploaded.

@Iyang_Huang I am wondering if the problem is the tinyicons (the blue balls). If you unassign all the materials does the hovering of the mouse get quicker. Also the viewport selection?

If this is the problem then I have a fix for it.

HI Max, unfortunately, unassigning material does not help with the issue.

Thank you for the information.

Thank you for the model. What if you load protect the Enscape plugin?

In Plug-ins locate Enscape and click the Enabled column. Then restart Rhino. Does this impact speed?

One other thing. Is there a difference if you switch from list mode to tree view?
