Great!
I hope there will be some kind of improvement soon!
I did the system check, maybe it is of some help:

I also did just a fast test now.
Maybe this can also help to pinpoint the origin of the slowdown:
By now I think the slowdown in Rhino 8 may happen with files created in Rhino 7.
In fact, I just imported some geometry from my current project (done in Rhino 7) and now layers colaps much slower!
Up to some seconds… so quite annoying…
I hope this helps!
Hi @mirkos,
The slow down between V7 and V8 is due to the change in UI library and has nothing to do with the 3dm files coming from V7.
– Dale
strangely, as I described, a quiet heavy V8 file with lots of layers showed a big slowdown just after I imported geometry from Rhino 7…
I went from microseconds to 1-3 seconds each time I clicked on the colaps triangle
If you can’t replicate that, then it was may be just casual… I don’t know, but it was what I observed yesterday.
Anyways… whatever the reason is, I hope there will be a solution soon.
Right now I’m back to Rhino 7.
I just need a snappy interface for my everyday work.
I have recorded some videos showing what I experience.
Rhino interface (you can see how I can move my mouse around and Rhino is still adding layers, its a slow Rhino
)
Interface working as expected. (notice how much faster and smooth it looks, it also feels that way)
Please fix this, very disruptive to workflow. Returning to V7.
Hey everyone, thanks for your feedback on this issue.
There have been some performance improvements of the Layers panel in 8.9 (the current Service Release Candidate), so please give it a try. That being said, we still need to get this going faster and is still on our list.
I can see a small improvement in the time it takes to create a layer. For my workflow still too slow compared to past Rhino versions, but it’s good to see there is progress.
Also panning in the viewport looks faster.
Hi guys,
Experiencing the same issue as stated above, unfortunately to the degree that I just rolled back to R7. It’s very disruptive to the workflow, simply can’t use R8.
Hi everyone. R7 was the best rhino version in my opinion. I have been testing R8 for a while and the program is very slow. There is a very serious fps problem. The file I work with 60 fps in R7 moves with only 5 fps in R8.
Hey @user1213 - the Layers panel, the subject of this thread, doesn’t effect viewport FPS. Perhaps you can start a thread so we don’t confuse your issue with the one being discussed?
Thanks,
– Dale
Is there any chance this huge WTF will be resolved soon? Would love to move to Rhino 8
I’m still having issues with this. Regardless of file size or the number of layers, the layer panel runs extremely slow.
If it’s of any use, BricsCAD v. 25 has a layer lag problem on my system that feels similar to Rhino 8’s. It renders both versions of these programs unusable for me.
Has there been any progress on this at all? Are we just giving up? Rhino 8 still unusable for me.
still slow in Rhino 9 WIP.
Would storage hardware speeds affect this maybe?
I’m running old HDD and SSD in partition sometimes I notice when assigning a layer to an object it freezes and I hear the HDD working a bit then it opens normally
This only happens in Rhino 8 with 5 no problems I’m thinking this since V8 is more demanding and depends on what hw storage setup it’s running from
I don’t hear of this configuation often anymore. How old is your system?
Windows, Rhino, and other applications should always be installed on your fastest storage device, SSD in your case.
