I need help opening a very large rhino file (2.3 GB). I was making a bunch of subD quadmeshes and the file will no longer open in rhino 7. When I try to open the rhino screen is black with a loading wheel on the mouse and stay like that for as long as I have the file open. It eventually turns gray and then windows tells me rhino is not responding. I looked at some other previous threads and tried these all with no success:
Rescue3dm file
Opening/Importing in Safe Mode
Trying to open it on a different computer with larger RAM (32gb instead of 16gb)
If someone would be able to open the file and delete all meshes/subd geometry and send it back that would be greatly appreciated!
How long have you waited for it to load? It generally hasn’t actually run out of memory and crashed until Windows tell you so, “not responding” just means it’s busy.
I’ve waited 30+ minutes. Windows consistently gives me the pop up a couple minutes in to opening the file that Rhino 7 is not responding, giving me the options to close the program or wait to respond
Something is definitely wrong. I’ve opened 8Gb files and I don’t think it took more than 2 or 3 minutes. Are you opening from your hard drive or across a network?
try opening a new file and importing it into the blank file… that will strip the render mesh and open in wireframe… that may get you a little wiggle room RAM wise…

Hi Tommy - just to eiliminate the possibility, please block/disable Enscape in Options > Plug-ins page and then close Rhino reopen it and try to open the file again.
I’d disable ALL plug-ins that do not ship with Rhino, including Enscape:

Hi Tommy - I guess you’d better send us the file for a look - zip and upload to Rhino - Upload to Support to my attention… this might or might not work, large files sometimes fail to finish uploading but worth a shot.
@Tommy3 - so far it seems bad here too. I’ll have to send it to the larger brains.
@Tommy3 - this did eventually open in V8 - I went off to eat lunch and forgot about it. Might have opened in 7 if I’d done the same. In any case, the blob of SubDs in the middle do seem the be thing that Rhino does not love, I will send this back without them.
Hello, I know this is an old post, but I am having an odd issue similar to this. My 90 MB file will not open on rhino 7 or rhino 8. I recently updated to Mac OS Sanoma and have only had problems since. My Mac just says that rhino is not responding. I have also tried the “Killall Finder” command and that did not work either.
