Having similar issue here

Hi Bill -

At the very least, the SystemInfo output and a sample file is needed to be able to look into this.
-wim

Thanks Wim, I did send the file yesterday using the link earlier in the thread.
system info as follows. rescue3dm (analyse) flagged no errors but failed to import.

I left it opening overnight and was able to use the file this morning to print from layouts etc… all worked fine

I had to close and re-open and three hours in it still hasn’t opened (again) but I envsiage it will probably in about 5 hours or so !!!

Hi Bill -

Thanks for that, Bill. I let Rhino run overnight to get audit information but I ended that process now as it was hanging much of my system. I’ve put this on the list for a closer look by a developer:
RH-85040 File IO: Files Open Fine in RH7, Not in RH8
-wim

Thank you Wim, I look forward to getting some sort of feedback eventually, if only so I can adapt my working practices to reflect. Appreciate you coming back to me

FYI I’ve heard back from McNeel Europe who say that the file opening time is unavoidable due to complexity of meshes. They also successfully opened after running overnight.

I did run quad re-mesh on the mesh used (there is only one) and reduced it as much as I could w/o losing resolution - they are approx. 1/2 the size/complexity of the original mesh - size = 26MB
This is a ‘bad mesh’ in the sense that there are naked edges… but opens fine as a separate file.

The other meshes (4 identical) I converted to sub-D and lowered resolution significantly. These are 31MB each

How it then arrives at 2GB file I can’t say - there is nothing complicated in the model except the meshes (just a handful of 6 sided/faced polysurfaces) and some layouts.

Hi Bill -

Clearly, Rhino 7 did something differently…

2.73 GB ;] The Audit3dmFile report would have given me more information but I can’t have that block my PC an entire workday or more. We’ll see what the developers find out.
-wim

Thank you Wim,
I will also see if I can recreate the file…and establish why/where the sudden jump in file size occurs

I’ve re-created the file from scratch (importing same meshes and re-creating the rest) and the file size is now a far more manageable 424MB.
So I am bit perplexed as to what happened there. Would it be helpful to send the revised version for comparison purposes - as I explained they should be broadly identical (bar a few variations in some free-hand curves)?

Hi Bill -

You can send it over and I’ll add a comment on the YT report.

Hi,

sorry to bother you but I’m having some problems opening a 86mb .skp 2024 model bought online. When I try to open it on Rhino7 it tells me “Error importing file”. I even tried to export it from SketchUp as .obj but it became even larger, reaching the dimension of 1gb and doesn’t load on Rhino. Do you have any suggestions on what I could do to solve this problem?

Hi Filippo,

If you upload the file here we can give it a try.

https://www.rhino3d.com/upload

I have another file… 419MB
Took 8 hours to open
Will send via link above…

Hi Bill -

Did you also test that file in Rhino 7? The file that was sent in in the Rhino 8 format…
-wim

Hi Wim, No I only use Rhino 8

Hi Bill -

Does that mean that one day this file was fine, and the next it took 8 hours to open?
-wim

yes basically. I created the file… carried out a _quadremesh to convert a polysurface into a SubD object. Saved.
When trying to reopen it takes hours not minutes…
I think it is related to SubD and meshes co-existing in the same model or something ?

It will open eventually but takes some significant time

Thanks. I’ve added the file to RH-85040.
