I "think" this is a V8 Bug

Hi guys,

I am running Rhino 8 on my Windows 10 machine and there are many times I am unable to select surfaces in shaded view for filleting. It’s weird though, when this happens I can use my 3D motion controller to move the geometry and while it’s moving it’s selectable and everything works fine. I am running a Quadro RTX 5000 video card. I can also select them in tho opposite order and they are selectable and the filleting works fine. It seems other display modes seem to work ok too, it seems like it might only be the shaded display mode. I can upload a file where I have isolated the problem if that’s helpful.

Thanks!
Jeff

Hi Mht Jeff,

Can you run the systemInfo in the Rhino command line and post the results?

Are there steps/example that we can try to replicate the issue with? Thanks!

Hi Japhy,

Here is the systeminfo you requested. I have also attached the file in question. If you try selecting the surfaces on the left first using a .25" radius, you’ll see the issue. If you select the revolved surfaces on the right first it works fine.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Jeff

Japhy,

This also happens when selecting surfaces during trim command. It might be generally a selection issue, not related to any particular command.

Jeff

I noticed that your Nvidia driver is pretty old in video driver time. You might consider updating it to see if anything improves.

Hi AIW,

This is my corporate machine so I will have to put in a request for an updated driver, I’ll do that.

Thanks!

Ok, I updated the video driver and still have the same issue. Here’s a new systeminfo list.

Please help!

hI Mht Jeff,

What method of selecting are you using?

Selecting with a mouse, is there another way of selecting? It’s the same with the trim command on surfaces as well, I have to rotate the geometry with my 3D controller to be able to select surfaces for the trim command.

Changing the view will SOMETIMES help, but not always. Rotating while selecting ALWAYS works.

Rhino 7 has no problem with this same geometry,

ok, maybe this is a clue?. If I select the surface at the isocurve area shown things work as expected.

Hi Jeff -

When I open your file, there is a single maximized viewport named “Selection Problem”. This viewport is in Wireframe mode. Since you mention that this issue is only present when in Shaded mode, I’m guessing that you actually saved the file in that mode and that opening in Wireframe on my system simply means that you are using a custom display mode that is not available on my machine. If that is correct, do you also see the issue when in the factory-default Shaded mode?

Apart from that, I’m unclear on the instructions provided. Do you first run a command (which one?) and then select an object (which one of the two or three “on the left”)?

What happens when you only use the laptop’s screen and disconnect the external device?
-wim

Hi Wim,

You are correct, I am using a custom display mode, it’s a modified version of your Shaded mode. I tried the standard Shaded mode and it’s the same - no workee.

I did try disconnecting the external displays and that made no difference either.

The command I am running is FilletSrf, with a .250 radius, and the problem selection order is surface #1 to surface #2, and Surface #3 to Surface #4. You have to be careful though, if you select the isocurve in the middle of the suface the fillet will work, but if you’re off that isocurve it will not. Also, reversing the selection order makes things work as expected.

Hi @wim,

Please see Rhino 8 Selection Anomaly for a simple example of selection problems in shaded mode - there was no response from McNeel in that thread but it may well be related to this one.

Thanks
Jeremy

Jeremy,
It seems to me that our issues are very similar, yup.
This seems like it’s definitely a BUG to me and hopefully McNeel gets it fixed quickly.

Thanks!

I haven’t been able to repeat on your example, hopefully someone can.

If we can repeat we’ll get this in front of the devs right away.

Japhy,

Is anyone there on a Windows 10 machine with a Quadro RTX 5000 vid..card?

Japhy,

I sure hope your guys are able to replicate this bug and get it fixed right away as this is a huge deal. It’s not just an occasional fillet problem, it’s a general surface selection issue affecting mostly every command that required surface selection. For a guy like me that spends 8-10 hours a day every day working in Rhino it’s a major disruption in workflow and it makes me not even want to work in Rhino 8 :frowning:

I’ve been working with Rhino for 30 years now! I love the program! Please fix it…

Thanks for your help!
Jeff
