Roman Pottery.3dm (1.3 MB)
Hi
Im trying to texture pottery in a Roman style effect, ive added colour and a gritty bump layer, but want to make it look more rustic/authentic.
Trying to work out whether i make changes to the object by clicking object Material in the Layer tab, or should i use the Texture or Material Panel, or do they all lead to the same result.
Any advice or if there are any links to tutorials to better understand textures that would be great.
Thanks
I’ve watched a few of those videos but was a bit overwhelmed with information, it’s a bit of a steep learning curve for me as I’ve never used materials or textures before in drawings.
I’ll rewatch the videos and get a better understanding of the terminology and workflow.
You were pretty close using the bump channel in a material but I’d suggest a few changes to take it to the next level…
Change the Custom material to a Physically Based one via the Type drop down for it in the Materials panel. Then add a Color channel using the ‘Detailed Settings’ button for the material. In the color channel add an FBM texture and change the colors as well as set the mapping to WCS box style. Reduce the % field for the texture to allow some of the base color to come through and blend with it. Now you have a bit of varied color texture as well as bump.
Thanks Brian,
If i was to add a gradient to the whole bot aswell, would be this added by then adding a gradient texture to the fbm texture or would it be best to have it a separate bump map.
Would it be that the gradient would only to the parent texture if i had them together were as under a bump map it would apply to the whole pot?
Hi @Andy15
Here’s a pottery PBR material I have. Originally it’s grey, but I’ve blended it with a light orange to better make it fit the reference photo in your file. Also, I’ve taken the liberty of UV unwrapping your geometry - which is why there’s a few splits added to the bottom and top. Also added a couple of area lights, which also helps with the way the material looks. Turn up the bump map to make it even grittier. Hopefully this can add to what has already been written by the others The textures are quite large, so here’s a download link:
