I understand all that. The UI even tho it might not be modern, is pretty straightforward and well thought out.
But I still stand on that - that Rhino deserves a much better UI, eliminating all those bugs and giving us a streamlined experience across any machines, plugins and in Rhino itself.
I also understand that McNeel won’t pour any effort or funds into revamping their UI.
What I don’t understand is - Why would some people feel it might be a doomsday scenario?!
They trust McNeel with the core functionality with the software they use constantly, but won’t trust them with improving the UI?!
I agree. I think the reason they won’t do it any time soon is that they simply don’t have the resources for it. And I don’t just mean in time, but in people who have enough expertise in that. Building a UI for such a complex tool is really a difficult task and for the project not to take several years you would need a team of people: A project manager to be in charge, at least 2 or 3 devs, a UX person, a designer to do it properly.
But yes, the strange thing is, that it clearly CAN work as we can see in Grasshopper which has a really wonderful UI.
Every software under the sun that has been around for more than a handful of years has undergone some major UI changes and in the end most people agree it was for the better (eg Blender, Windows, etc.). I don’t understand either why a redesign would be so terrible. Obviously the goal is to make it better, so why be against it?
This is an interesting take. Grasshopper does not support customization of the user interface through docking windows to different locations. Removing the docking capabilities in Rhino would definitely make the problem of items being restored in the wrong place go away.
Sorry , but the number of other programs (from simple to very complex) that have this problem solved (without any of the age-old problems Rhino shows) is virtually infinite.
McNeel should really hold itself to higher standards rather than weasle out by removing customization alltogether.
I love Rhino, but sure as hell in spite of its unreliable panels/toolbars.
