Extremely dangerous BUG! Deleting Layers with Objects!

Hey Rhino Team,

if you rigthclick on a Layer and say delete. But there are still Objects on it, it asks if you really want to delete everything.

If you click NO!
It still deletes the Layer and you cant get it back with undo!
(The files are LOST! You have to be lucky and get it from autosave.)

EDIT: OBJECTS are not lost, but the layer is gone!

Please take a look into it. This is very dangerous!!!

@wim maybe?

Not seeing that here:

I am on windows10.

System_info.txt (2.9 KB)

The Files are still there after undo but the Layer name is Layer01
But in Properties of the Objects still the old name and the Name weird stuff!

Wait let me reproduce it

Okay, the object stays in the File.

BUT the layer gets deleted, in Layers

and is still somehow there as in the Object.

Look at the screenshot, it explains it well.

I can’t reproduce this either. Selecting No - nothing happens - layer and object stays there.

Hi Milan -

Rhino plugins that do not ship with Rhino
C:\Users\Milan\AppData\Roaming\McNeel\Rhinoceros\BlockEditNew\BlockEditNew_V8.rhp “BlockEdit” 1.0.0.0
C:\Users\Milan\AppData\Roaming\McNeel\Rhinoceros\8.0\Plug-ins\D5LiveSync (e0d5e210-02f6-4ee9-a2b0-1675e225d958)\D5Conv.rhp “D5 Live Sync for Rhino”

Can you reproduce the issue when those plug-ins are disabled and Rhino restarted?
-wim

I will test it later, no time right now

I’m seeing the layer name disappear from the layers panel, but the layer seems to still exist under the hood since I can’t recreate the layer as “A layer with that name already exists”.

Saving, closing, reopening brings the layer back in the panel.

@wim I wonder if it is a 8.17 bug, I tested with 8.18.

@mi.land if this happens again, could you try to type something in the layer search and then clear that again? Might be a refresh issue.

This brings it back for me.

A post was split to a new topic: Feature request: Add indication that Layer search is active

Yeah, same here that brings it back.

Since “Measure” had the same Problem without Plugins i don’t need to test it again.

Hi -
We had this issue on the list as RH-86060 Delete Layer Glitch (Win Only)
This is fixed in 8.18.

@wim sadly it’s not completely solved:

Problem still exists with mutliple selected Layers some with Objects and some without Objects!

Same refresh Problems like before!

No matter if you choose NO or NO TO ALL

Please post your updated SystemInfo data…

I don’t think it changed so much in 9 days… except 1 Update but here:

Hi Milan -

Rhino 8 SR17 2025-2-25

Well…

Sorry to waste time…

I just updated and the Single layer delete “NO” was working again.
So i thought it was solved.

Didn’t check the 8.18.
:flushed:

Hi Milan -

Me too, but it isn’t. I’ve reopened that issue.
