'Encounter an improper argument' and rhino file becomes tmp file

Hi guys I just encountered a problem today when using rhino 8.

The window pops up saying ‘Encounter an improper argument’ and then I can’t perform any command anymore not even close it. I had to shut down rhino using task manager.

Futhermore, the 3dm files I was working on became xxxx.tmp
It would be great if I can sort this problem asap.

I’ve done a bit research and run the systeminfo:

and I noticed, earlier today there’re 2 windows updates being installed, don’t know if it’s related but here it is:

2025-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5050009)
2025-01 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 24H2 for x64 (KB5049622)

Please let me know if there’re any information I can provide.
Also if it is possible to recover those tmp file back to 3dm

Thank you in advance

Hi Sum -

Is this something that you can reproduce when starting from a new file from a factory-default template? Or is this something that happened one single time?

What happens when you rename that to 3dm?
Note that, by default, if you have saved a specific file several times, previous versions will be moved to the trash and you should be able to find an earlier version there.

Hi Wim,

Yesterday it happened two times. I exported the model from the same project but previous file to continue working on and that was when I bumped into the 2nd time…

However I have worked with Rhino today the whole day and didnt bump into the same problem again… I assumed it’s just a one time scenario… I hope so…

As for the .tmp, yes thank you for the tips when I renamed it back to .3dm, I am able to open it again and seems ok.

Hopefully it’s the end of the incident.
