Default layer material color

Im sure this has been asked before but when you create a new layer the default material is plaster. Is there a way to change that default? I dont like working with pure white objects and its annoying to have to change it every time . It would be nice if we could either change the default or it just be a medium gray to begin with.

And yes I understand you can set up a template with layers that are already set to a preset color however even with that when you create a new layer it goes back to plaster white. I want that to be gray always or simply customizable instead. Is this possible?

cheers

It sure would be useful. We have a similar request chain going here regarding default layer print settings:

I have been asking for it for years (to no avail, I don’t even think its on a wish pile), I never use Plaster, always PITA to switch it every time for new layer.

The new layer settings should be configurable, including all layer properties and material type.

Yeah I agree but even it it wasnt configurable at least make the default color a medium gray.

you can create your own display mode.

just go to options → display mode and do a copy of “rendered”.
rename it.
inside the display mode
under General → Shading Setting
you can either set a single Material for all objects or use the objects color.
(which is the layer color)

under view you can set the displaymode to your custom style.

check other topics in this forum regarding display mode or the help.

does this fulfil your wish ? kind regards -tom

Thanks, yeah I have all that. Its a fine work around but its just that, a work around. I have several display modes set up for different purposes . This is more of just having the option to have the default material color regardless of display mode be able to be set to what ever you want.

this would be much better for physically-based renderers as well, since pure white is unrealistic
