Crashing when working with layouts

21-03-23
Hello, I’m new to Rhino, currently deep diving into tutorials before I start soon on a project on which I’ll need to be using it.
Encountered a frustrating problem today as I learn about layouts.
Rhino doesn’t want to open existing layout pages - circle of death then crash. If I create a new layout, Rhino also crashes if I try to delete it.
I am up to date with versions.
System Info etc attached
Help please
Peter

Hi
There are no crash reports in the system associated with your email address.
When the cartoon Rhino and the deflated beachball crash reporter tool comes up, add your email address and a description of what you were doing when Rhino choked.

For now, please run the System Information command from the Help pull-down menu, and return that information in a reply.

Thanks

Thanks John,
I have attached the system info.
It’s not crashing, just gives me the grey screen ‘wheel of death’ for more than 10- 15 minutes before I have to close it manually.
It happens when I try to open an existing layout tab (screengrab attached)
And I am simply unable to open another file (screengrab attached)
Appreciate your help
Would it help to send the file itself??
Peter

Your display drivers are very old. See if updating those resolves your issue.

Thanks Gijs.
I have updated drivers, unfortunately same issue.
Also followed John Brock’s advice on thread: Soooo, you bought a laptop with hybrid graphics and rhino doesn't run right. READ THIS.

Could it be an issue similar to Rhino 7 crashing like hell when activating or trying to work with layouts? ??

Cheers, Peter

Hi Peter, in that case, can you send again _systeminfo and post it back, and also send the model. You can upload it here. Please mention this thread and @ mention me here once done so I can see if I can repeat the issues you are seeing.
Additionally what you can do is make a memory dump and send that (will be a big file, so pls use 7-zip to zip it then upload it to the same page).
To make a memory dump, see this page

Hi Peter -

When you start Rhino from a factory-default template and leave that empty, are you having issues with creating or deleting layouts then?

From your screenshots, it looks like Rhino is working hard on creating display meshes for viewports in a technical display mode. For some objects, and on some hardware, that can take a very long time…
-wim

good catch, that might be it

Thanks for sticking with me on this Gijs and Wim
I have uploaded files and dump per our instructions and attached is the system info
Look forward to hearing further
Cheers Peter

hi @peter_gideon a few things that catch my attention:

Physical RAM: 7.9Gb (this is a weird number but also very low)

Primary OpenGL: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M (NVidia) Memory: 4GB, Driver date: 12-18-2017
still shows a very old driver

Did you try @Wim 's suggestion already?

@peter_gideon I think there is still a newer driver you could try: Geforce Driver Results | NVIDIA

I am also getting frequent random no warning crashes in layouts. There is no clear pattern when it happens, just always in layouts. Rhino just closes in a flash.

Hi Primož -

Is there a crash reporter after Rhino has closed?

Have you tried Rhino 8 to see if that behaves the same way on your system?
-wim

No, rhino just closes in a flash. I haven’t, and I’m currently unable to try it as my project is based on plugins such as VisualARQ. The crash happens completely at random, sometimes multiple hours between crashes. Sometimes it crashes when the moment I switch to a layout viewport, at other times it happens simply when navigating the layouts. Currently, I don’t have the time to spend hours testing the issue in R8. Maybe someone else who is experiencing the same issue finds this thread and can file a report as well.
