it was precisely the discourse code that I was wondering about. Merely that whatever it is doing, perhaps it is somehow selecting based upon time since the last known response. For example, the entire current rotating selection seems to date back to topics beyond March 7th.
If we conduct several refreshes, it seems to unveil a limit on the time (or buffer, let’s see).
If you are in a Desktop browser, you can almost see the selection limit that seems to end at the point of the first “buffer” of what is deemed to be the top selection of gallery topics.
Perhaps the “wow” tag is limited to whatever is contained in the same buffer as my timely capture shows. Any images after the time of the spinning buffering icon are therefore excluded from the banner, as they are not pre-loaded.
Indeed, I do not see “Organic gallery”, “R18 Motorcycle”, or “Secret Patio” in the banner anymore:
well… sadly it’s a bit of a blunt tool from our end.
we tag it and hand it to the Discourse banner code. There are no fine adjustments that we can change.
we can promote it or de-promote it.
that’s it.
the order, randomness, repeatability and actual selection the images is all black box once we tag it.
there seems to be some ranking that happens depending on how often something gets clicked on, but I have no access to actual data for if that is happening or if so what the criteria is.
i guess we needed just a little distraction indeed from the daily filet rant
thanks @Gijs it indeed got more again, but just more of the old stuff that i have seen many times.
i still hope that you guys could consider rethinking that admin tagging only concept, or at least pick some more that do not fulfil the small boys dreams only (like cars and robots and whatnot) and the classic industrial design stuff with some very occasional architectural project.. not that any of these are bad i really like the selection otherwise but its just too narrow banded.
I think it is pretty diverse as it is. Keep in mind, this forum gets over a million visitors per month, and most people won’t frequent it as much as you do.
i dont think it is about how i or others perceive it that frequent it more often, though it is going on my nerves quite a bit seeing the same stuff, but it is definitely more about stereotyping what rhino is for, many people might never check out the gallery and just come here for occasional coffee and cream.
till now i almost exclusively see people participating in favour for how it currently is that are/were part of the roulette you included, so we probably can agree that this might bias the judgment a bit.
just to be sure it is not meant as an offence but pure observation.
There are only 1264 items in the Gallery right now. 249 are tagged Wow. Repetition is inevitable.
But what I find interesting is that if I browse Gallery items tagged Wow then I come away less impressed than when I browse the entire Gallery. That is not to say the Wow items are poor, they aren’t. And the full Gallery contains some duff stuff that Wow filters out. But, notwithstanding the duds, the full Gallery just seems more interesting. That surprised me.
yes that is one of the main observations we definitely share. the entire “wow” experience has ironically taken a lot from the actual WOW effect that certainly was more pronounced in the roulette before we had “wow”.
